Hig789
Really interested in trying one out in my 15g but I have a two year old that likes to do stuff he shouldn't. Just curious how strong the magnet connection between the two sides is. The acrylic on my 15 is really thin, would be able to easily separate the two? Is it as strong as a Tunze magnet? The magnet is surprisingly strong, but if a chid decides to pull on it it WILL fall. They supply a special kit with every Vortech so that the pump will not break on the ground- it has a super sticky hook that holds it up if disconnected. Link to comment

I was thinking of something like that anyways but I'm more worried about the wet side falling on corals or just falling in general. Link to comment

The dry side is what I would worry about with a child in the house, but Ecotech gives that kit Link to comment

markalot
Wet side will fall IMO, it all depends on the surface it's on. I've knocked an MP10 dry side off on purpose to save a fish and the wet side and the fish went tumbling down. The strength of dry side on the glass is determined by the thickness of the glass. On my 29 gallon the wet side is easily moved. Alignment is critical to the function and life of the dry side so you don't want someone moving it all the time. I would still get an MP10, but just be sure the area directly below the wet side is clear in case it falls. Link to comment
GHill762
sometimes they stick sometimes they don't, depends how clean the glass is under them and how long since you moved them. but, like Mark said, the wet side usually doesn't stick as much as the dry side. don't worry about it coming off and hitting coral, it won't really hurt anything. the magnet is pretty strong, but I'd say just try to keep your 2yo away from the dry side or tell him/her not to touch that (cuz, you know, that works with 2yo's). Haha. Yeah that's not gonna happen. He listens really well. But like any other two year old if you draw attention to something it will make them want to mess with it more. The good thing about the 6040 is that I can mount it on the back wall and put the magnet in the filter compartment. I have room to mount the mp10 on the back wall above the water but if we lose power and the levels equalize then it would probably be in the water a little. Wish the dry side was water proof. That would be awesome. Link to comment

That would be awesome. you could put it in a sandwhich baggie, that would give you a little bit of insurance, my only concern would be that it would be trapping the heat in.. in all honesty, you should be just fine with it on the outside of the tank. a wet side falling on coral isn't really going to hurt anything except maybe break tips off of some more delicate sps or irritate a clam or anemone, otherwise it's not that heavy. and the dry side won't go anywhere if you have it zip tied like you're supposed to. Hig789
I'm curious that since my acrylic is so thin I wonder if I could build a little bowl for the dry side to sit down in to keep it from getting wet if the power goes out. They are rated up to 3/8" thick glass and I don't think two pieces of acrylic would be that thick. Something like this just a quick sketch. Link to comment

I wanted to put it in the back compartment of my AIO. It's 3" wide and is just a big open space and I was debating building a small acrylic box to put the dry side in case it fell or the power was lost causing the water level in the back to rise when the return pump shut off. Ooooh ok makes sense now, I would build a little acrylic box of some sort to hold it like you said Link to comment
CrazyEyes
I gotta be honest, I thought about doing this on my solana, I wanted to build a small waterproof chamber so I could put my mp10 on the aio wall, then I decided it wasnt worth the hassle and chance of the compartment leaking. Id just stick with how they're meant to be ran, if you want something on the back wall get a tunze or a jebao of some sort. Just my opinion. Link to comment

Was just wanting to try something different. Don't see how it would leak if you welded the acrylic and tested that it would hold water. No different than a acrylic tank. Link to comment
CrazyEyes
Chances are it probably wouldn't leak. The other thing I'd worry about is heat, I know my mp10s get fairly hot over 60% and that's with them in the open. Not trying to deter you, just a few things to consider. Link to comment

I seriously doubt I'll have it running near 60% in my 15g. If I do I wouldn't have a sand bed left. Haha. I can get my 6040 turned up to about 50% on the wave setting if I place it right. Normally only run it at about 40%. Really it shouldn't be much different than being on the side if I make a box that just as high as my water would go. It probably wouldn't even cover half of the dry side. Might get one and try it out. The worst it can do is not work and I can put it on the side. Link to comment
Bryants
Please let us know how it comes out with pictures if you build the enclosure for your mp10. Link to comment
righttirefire
Too drunk didn't read past first 3 posts. My mp10 holds great on my glass 20 standard. Like Harry linked the sticky zip tie holder for the cord supports the dry side. It takes effort to remove the wet side for cleaning. My opinion. Link to comment
Hig789
Well I got my mp10 today and stuck it in there. Wow that sucker moves some serious water with a very wide and gentle flow. I see what all the hype is about now. I also ordered a Pico Aquariums shallow shield for it so I can mount it near the top of the tank. Now I need to make the acrylic box for it to go in. What size tank do you have? I'm curious because not many people use/need to use a shield It is NOT waterproof, and IMO you are better off with it on the side glass. Link to comment

The water level in the back chamber of mine runs about 4" from the top and I am going to mount the mp10 close to the top of the main tank water level to keep it above the water in the rear. The enclosure I am going to make is just a preventive measure just incase the power goes out and the water equalizes. I tried the zip tie cord holders earlier and even if the dry side fell off it would still be well above the water. Mounting it on the side is not a option that I am considering. My two year old would constantly be pulling it off and I really like the clean look of not having anything mounted to the side of the tank. Also with mounting it so high and using the shield it is almost hidden behind my hood. Link to comment
Hig789
Alright I didn't do it. Had it back there running for a few days with the water level low and the cord clamped so it wouldn't hit the water if it fell. But I found out that I wouldn't be able to fit my 9001 in there with the mp10 so it got moved to the side. No where near as nice of flow on the side though but it'll have to do. I still need to mess with the placement up and down though. The center of the pump is about 3" below the water line right now. Link to comment
