piano15
I was trying to find the acceptable nitrate levels and I can't seem to. I want 0 nitrates but what are the acceptable levels in the tank? Link to comment
righttirefire
Are you using API test kits? What media or export methods are you using. Link to comment
LilCope
Acceptable levels is personal. For me 5-10ppm is fine (softie and LPS tank). I wont accept higher than 15. Other say 0ppm or 5ppm.If you want zero nitrate consider: larger water changes, higher macroalgae nutrient export, resins, vodka dosing w/ skimmer, etc. Link to comment
piano15
I haven't set up yet but will be running: 15g with 15lbs live & baserock(mostly liverock) 20lbs livesand HOB filter with floss and carbon to start, most likely will add phosguard too Ya, API tests is what I can get Link to comment
righttirefire
My API is impossible to read between 0-20 ppm. The red sea supports the 0 ppm reading. I have a large amount of chaeto and struggle with phosphate not nitrate Link to comment

righttirefire
Harry.... lol... last checked it was at .06 ppm phosphates I'd prefer 0 knowing my chaeto is exporting it... Link to comment

Acceptable levels depend on what you want to keep. Softies like a little bit of nitrates, SPS not soo much. Even some SPS users want to keep Nitrates above zero (like 2-5 so still low). SPS can brown out with too high of nitrates but can get also get pale if they are too low. Link to comment
Murphs_Reef
I keep softies, clowns and various hermits, my nitrates are usually 10 when I need to do a water change and then down to around 5 afterwards. Phosphate levels are usually in the 0.5 / 0.25 area.... I can pretty much predict the levels of both based on day of the week. Just need to clean glass more often with above zero but nothing seems to care..in fact the xenia seem to love it.. Link to comment
