[update] - 9/15/15]

Have a ponape birdsnest that will hopefully recover and start coloring up really well. I'm still looking for some new frags. Mostly just more birdsnest frags and also some digis which are awesome.

[update - 9/12/15]

Tomorrow I should be picking up a ponape birdsnest which looks fantastic (green body with purple tips). There are more variations of birdsnest and I'm definitely looking for more! Probably my favorite coral, haha.

[update - 8/25/15]

I'm pretty much full in my frag rack. Right now I'm looking for some birdsnest that isn't pink. If there are any other corals that grow quickly or are similar to the birdsnest then I may be interested as well.

[update - 8/10/15]

Still looking for some new local frags. Would love to get another birdsnest that isn't pink.

[update - 8/1/15]

Went to the Reef Farm and bought three more SPS corals. Got an orange digi, a blue digi, and a blue acro. Still willing to buy locally from other users. Only paid 15 for digi and then 20 for the acro

[update - 7/31/15]

I'm back at it and I'm looking for some new branching SPS corals. I currently have a red planet acro, pink birdsnest, and a couple of monti caps. Specifically I'm looking for more birdsnest but of a different color and some other cheap acros. For acros, $20 a frag is about all I want to spend. I'm not looking for some collector pieces, just some more stuff to fill in my tank like usual. If you have something that I may be interested in then please post or mail me with the name of the frag and how much you want for it. I think I'm heading to the reef farm tomorrow in order to pick up some more frags as well. I'd also be interested in some smaller LPS frags such as duncans or candy canes (already have a green one).

Looking to get some cheap local frags in the Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Durham area.. Plating montipora, birdsnest, and acan lords are the ones that I'm looking for the most but I'm open to anything really. Zoas are kind of meh and I've never seen the attraction of them. Not looking for anything super rare (not paying $30 for a zoa polyp) but just looking to build up my live stock. Here is my current live stock list so obviously I don't want to repeat. NO SHIPPING UNLESS YOU WANT TO PAY THE COST OF SHIPPING

Purple tip hammer

Green tip hammer

Pink plating monti cap (want more colors)

Purple torch

Watermelon zoas

Green bay packers

Pink and green acan lord

Purple and red acan lord

Pinkish purple kenya tree

Pulsing xenia

Purple with green center favia

Green tipped torch

Red paly

Orange florida ricordea

Green florida ricordea

Some green chalice

a few other zoas that I don't know the names of.

pm'd. Those are some amazing corals but they may be a bit out of my price range. I'm looking for some cheaper ~$15 frags as I just want to fill in my tank and get some more experience with SPS corals.

I'm local - in CH myself. I don't have much to trade, but if you are ever selling anything let me know!

This is what I have right now in the form of frags. The tall frag has 20-30 polyps of watermelon zoas. I thought about fragging it but it's covered in zoas so I'm not sure what the best way to do it. The frag to the left bottom left of it has watermelon zoas as well. That frag has about 6 polyps. The bottom three are all the same. The frag all the way to the right only has one polyp, the middle has 4 polyps, and the left has 5-6 polyps. I have no idea what it's called so if anyone can help identify then I would be very happy. It has yellow/green tentacles, a light whitish purple ring, dark purple inner ring, and then a yellow/green mouth. I looked through the zoa library and the closest I could find was the "blue n yellow" zoas (picture link below). Mine aren't as bright but they're under predominantly white light (2:1 white to blue) so they don't have the super bright colors to them. In the picture some of the polyps are also closed which is no longer happening. I'll try to get a better picture. Above the tall zoa is the skeleton of an encrusting acan that I bleached, haha. To the bottom left of the acan skeleton is a green chalice (nearly positive) that is beginning to grow onto the frag itself so I'm happy to say I haven't killed that yet! The xenia is on a rock and has a few heads on it. I put a frag plug next to it and I'm hoping to get it to jump to the frag plug.

Cool man! When i'm ready to add some more to my tank I might hit you up - I am getting ready to rescape the tank, so I am holding off until it all settles before I add anything.

Sounds good. These were the spare corals that I didn't really know what to do with. Now I'm just watching them grow and looking to get some more frags. I have a 36 watt bulb above this frag rack but I keep the bulb pretty high up. Looking to get some acros/birdsnest that need the higher light and see how that goes. Monti caps and maybe birdsnest can go in the display tank but I don't have much room up there.

you tried the LFS I think fish room has something you might like.

Not a huge fan of the fish room. The reef farm has a much better selection and prices but they're about 40 minutes away and I haven't had a chance to make it out there again. They're closed until this Sunday too but I may head over there then since I'll be doing water changes and stuff anyways.

I'm in Carrboro but right on the border with CH.

I'm over at 15-501 and 40 near the Durham line, myself. I work at UNC though. Spend a lot of time over in Carrboro :)

The fish room is awful... Prices too high, livestock always looks bad. My YCG came from them and was dead within a week. I will buy water from them if I'm in the area, but corals are all from The Reef Farm or Triad Reef Critters out in Greensboro.

If you are looking for some bargains go to the reef farm, if you are looking for selection go Triad Reef Critters both places are great about learning about your tank and recommending things for it.

Both of those places are either 45 minutes or an hour away. I've been to the reef farm once and it was pretty nice and I picked up a few corals. I think I may head over there on Sunday and see if I can snag a few frags. Still looking to see if anyone has some local frags for sale.

no update on my end. I didn't end up going to to any stores. My phone (Droid DNA) is literally coming apart at the seams and I'm probably going to have to get a new phone which is good and bad. My upgrade ends on the 27 of July so I have to hold out with this phone for a bit. I'm most likely going to switch off of my parents account which means that I'm going to have to start paying for it I think which sucks. $200 for the phone plus probably a bunch of fees is not going to be fun. That means I'm skipping the store trip and definitely not getting the NanoBox Duo I have been eyeing. Still looking for some local frags though. Would much rather buy a few entry level frags from a local.

Yea fish room sucks. Only good selection of dry goods and cheap bleaching coral.

What exactly are you looking for? You want high end corals without the high end price?

I got 3 beach bums with your name on it

I'm not necessarily looking for high end corals. Just SPS corals. I have next to no experience with them and would rather start off with some easier ones that don't cost a fortune. That's why I was looking for stuff like a birdsnest or some monti caps which aren't usually very expensive. This way if I happen to kill them, I'm not out a few hundred dollars. Hell, the monti cap I have is about 3" from side to side and I got it for $15.

How are there this many reefers in the triangle but no active club? Its killing me! I just moved to Morrisville from Ohio :flower:

Check out Reef Keepers Aquarium Inc too. They have lots of monti and birdnest frags.

Sorry I don't have any frags to contribute yet, but free bump for you.

Thanks. That's about an hour away since it's on the other side of Raleigh but it's another store added to my list. Oh, and ReefFarm opens at 11AM tomorrow. I think I know where I'm going.

Well, I went to the Reef Farm and dropped $80 on some corals. Got some great deals on some easier SPS corals. I ended up getting three plating monti caps, one pink birdsnest, one red planet acro, and a candy cane.

  • 2 weeks later...

I never new of the reef farm, they are only 15 minutes away and I pass by them like 4 times a week and not know it! I am always on New light Rd. Do they allow walk ins? I might go tomorrow to check them out!

It's a great place and they are really nice to talk to. That acro usually runs for $20 and the montis are $15 each. Their prices changed depending on how much they have. So the first time I was there, they had a ton of pulsing xenia so I got a deal on it. It's definitely my favorite place to buy corals. It's a bit overwhelming for me at least. They have a store and then they have the greenhouse. The greenhouse has four vats that are about 10"x10" and are all full of corals. The only thing is that nothing is labeled so you have to talk to them but they're incredibly knowledgeable and willing to help. Inside the main store they have some fish and I believe they have a few larger coral colonies in there as well.

In regards to going tomorrow, don't since they will be closed, haha. They do take walk ins but they're only open Saturday, Wednesday, and Sunday. Below is the link to their calendar and that shows which days and at what time they're open.
