piano15 Posted June 17, 2015 Author Share Posted June 17, 2015 it was originally for a 20g but I had to exchange the 20g and ended up with 15g. (long story) there is a 2x4 inside the stand, a 2x4 on each side of the original stand, plus the 4 2x2's legs the 2x4's along the sides of the original stand are difficult to see in the pics, especially once painted black. VW_TDI_02 Posted June 17, 2015 Share Posted June 17, 2015 Since it's only a 15 gallon then I wouldn't worry as much. I just don't see anything that prevents the stand from racking. Like, what's going to keep the stand from leaning in one direction once there is more weight on it. I see the box up on the top but that's about it. Link to comment

piano15 Posted June 17, 2015 Author Share Posted June 17, 2015 I think the stand is pretty stable, it doesn't move unless I really make it move, things pretty heavy now. I think for 20g or under it's pretty solid. The tank can't move within the box my hubby made for the top which has two pieces of wood as a base, plus all the lateral support from 3 2x4's and 4 2x2's plus the original structure Link to comment

Hubby hasn't done much woodwork and not any in many yrs....this was done in an apartment living room with very basic tools. Thank goodness lowes cuts wood:) We thought it came out pretty damn good for the limitations we had and the thing is definitely a solid stand now:) Link to comment

At one point those bottom columns were completely straight. Like a square changing shape and becoming a parallelogram and no longer a square. The taller the stand and the skinnier it is, the more likely that this will occur. Horizontal supports in order to keep everything square works and is pretty common. Kind of like what you have with the box above but also along the bottom. The other method is to use a sheet of plywood across the back. Screw it into your frame along the top, bottom, and sides and that will help keep everything square. Oh, and building stuff in an apartment is awful. I live in a one bedroom apartment with a living room and that's where I built my stand. Sanding and using a circular saw in the living room makes a complete mess and it took hours to clean up afterwords. Link to comment

I didn't use one in my place and I'm still finding dust everywhere:( No doubt depending on the weight load and materials used will cause issues but I think if ppl can keep 15g on random night tables, dressers, etc my stand should hold up pretty well.
