Ga912
My porcelain crab just molted now it's not moving. He's still hanging with two feet onto the rocks. How long does it take for the shell to harden. He was moving yesterday but not today help please. He molted a day ago Link to comment
atrox
Generally 2-3 days they will harden up, he's aware of his somewhat fragile state so his movement will be far reduced. Normally they have a nem or other coral to offer protection during this transition stage. I've confused molts for the actual crab before. Link to comment
amphipod
Watch out complications are many with moults, crabs have often relatively thicker shells compared to the rest the decapods, it takes longer to harden. But here also is an incurable complication I have seen where the animal will spontaneously die after a moult, and the shell often dosent get to harden. So keep an eye on the animal. Link to comment

Is there a reason for this. Because I think he is dead now but I can't tell. He is not floating it is still clinging on by two feet. I was giving it one day to move slightly before I pull the plug Link to comment
atrox
Stir up some water around it and check for movement. You sure you aren't looking at the discarded exoskeleton? Link to comment

amphipod
. Is there a reason for this. Because I think he is dead now but I can't tell. He is not floating it is still clinging on by two feet. I was giving it one day to move slightly before I pull the plugi know of no reason why it happens but I know of a lot of complications I have seen. You can check of he is dead by touching him, if he moves around a bit and or walks he's alive, of he is limp and unresponsive, dead. My skunk cleaner died after his 3rd molt I had a crayfish with certainly over 12 successful moults in my care, it died from being stuck in an old shell, age dosent offer any protection sadly. I used to breed electric Blues in my old 55 and I never had a problem with a molt my dominant male had many successful molts for the 4 years I had him and I had a couple other males but he was a beast, it was epic watching him and my tiger Oscar get into it haha Link to comment

Ruthless creatures, I once witnessed my dying snail get ripped apart by a cleaner shrimp and 4 hermits all fighting for the feast haha they are like vultures, half dead is close enough lol. amphipod
The more you keep the more likely you see moult issues, I have lost cockroaches, crickets, amphipods, and plenty of other arthropods over the years to moult issues Link to comment
