This is the return of the Fluval Edge tank I ran in college. Pulled it out of the folk's attic, moved it over to my place, and am in the process of brushing the dust off!!

Was inspired to start this thread in hopes of keeping a jawfish since my pearly jawfish didn't seem to make it in my 20L mixed reef build. I kept a blue-spoted jawfish in this tank for over two years in college, and I'm hoping to bring it back!! The lighting on this tank is horrible though, so instead of mess with trying to upgrade it, I figure I would do non-photosynthetic corals and just let the stock lighting do what it wants.

Tank: Fluval Edge 6-Gallon

Lighting: Stock Halogen light bulb (x2)

Flow: Koralia 240? (will this be enough?)

Filtration: Stock HOB with activated carbon. Live rock and live sand.

Proposed Stock:

-Pearly Jawfish

-Assorted snails as CUC

-Sun Corals

-Dendros (if I can find more at a decent price)

-Tube Anemones (purple with green center, pink with green center?)

Will get pictures up once there's something more than an empty, dirty, used tank to look at. Hoping to get some live sand and water in there tomorrow and let the cycling begin!!

Non Photosynthetic?

The Tube Anemone?

Love the idea and cant wait to see it. I have both a purple and orange tube anemone and their definitely some of my faves.

yes......?

Weird! Of course you're right, but I had no idea! I thought ALL anemone were photosynthetic- that being photosynthetic was a requirement of the species!

Thats so cool! Ive seen them in reef tanks but never w/o light!

Thank you! I've always admired them but was too chicken to put them in my mixed reef for lack of decent space for them. The orange ones remind me of an underwater torch, but purple is my favorite color... so why not both??

The real issue is being able to get in there to target feed like I'll need to. Maybe I'll place them all within baster-reach... or I guess when I cycle I can see how well broadcast feeding would potentially work.

Totally agree I had to have both once I saw them in person....Not to photobomb your thread but just wanted to share pics of mine

Well you could always broadcast feed if your willing to keep up with water changes but I do think target feeding them is ideal since they like to eat larger morsels

Tube anemones will catch and eat small fish, so be careful about that.

you know, i've heard of it happening before, but everyone i know that owns one says it's more of a common myth...

That's definitely a myth. Most fish are smart enough to steer clear of the tentacles. A fish would have to be sick or injured to be captured by these anemone.

rehype- since you're the resident expert on these guys, where is the best place to get them?

I've seen a few at my LFS for around 60 bucks. they look healthy and have intact tubes and what-not.... is that a good deal?

Also- best place to grab sun corals? (if i can't find any in a LFS)

The best place would be your LFS if they can get them. That way you can inspect their health and ensure theyre eating. $60 is the average price I've seen.

If your LFS can't secure them then I would recommend live aquaria's diver den.

Very interesting idea! There are a number of gorgonians that are non-photosynthetic too!!

How big do tube nems get?

Rehype would probably know best, but up to several inches.

I've never kept any gorgonians before... but I've always loved them.

The issue will be feeding in this tank, hands down.

Planning on picking up a powerhead today- 240 or 420?

I've always loved the NPS species, and if I was willing/able to feed on the regular, I'd give it a shot. I know you don't want to upgrade your lighting, but this is a very cool opportunity to get some really neat "moooood" lighting going on. Make it look like a cave or something...

I took this for Eugene, but feel like it's appropriate here too:

I wonder if theres a kind of halogen bulb that just plugs in or something with cool colors like that. I bet the crazy colors would make the pearly jawfish look crazy too!

after a quick browse, it doesn't look like it, but i could easily paint them myself with transparent paint or something?

I guess the concern there would be ensuring that the paint didn't burn as it got hot or something...

They're usually around 2-3 in diameter but the issues is the tentacles can extend upwards of 12" when mature.

Maintaining water quality with so little volume is going to be tough but Im sure it can be done with frequent water changes

Id say go wit the 420 as the nems like alot of flow.

got the 420. also went with fiji pink for the sand bed. counting on that deep sand bed to help with the water quality and bio filtration as well.

yes to the frequent water changes, but since it is a 6 gallon total, they'll be pretty easy and quick to do.

water is currently mixing- behold!! the first photo of the tank!

and actually, the more that i think of it, in that small space with that kind of flow, chances are pretty good that most food will end up getting slurped up pretty fast. it's not like it'll float away and get lost :P

Nice!! Can't believe to see someone going back to an edge!! I would honestly say if u can make that sand shallow, now is the time to do it. It's not really deep enough to have dsb effects imo, and given that this is a nps tank feeding is gonna be heavy and that sand will become a detritus trap that you will never be able to get to in order to clean due to the edges design. Trust me, ezperiencing this now with my edge and wish my sand was shallower. I would also say u may find the 420 to powerful as they are very directional. I was using a 240 in my edge with tons of stuff until I got the mp10 and I only run that at the third and fourth led.

Regarding cool color lights it's easy and cost less than 20-30 bucks as u may find one cheaper on Amazon or ebay. Buy some of this strip light with remote control. It can be bent (I have done this). And you can mount it directly in th me hood of edge and make it any color you want. It can also be cut and soldered together. I did this on my edge before I got some real lights.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0040FJ27S#

Really simple and the back is adhesive. I folder mine and made four rows going back and forth in the hood of my edge originally. I will take some photos of the material if u want. I don't have my hood around anymore but still have a bunch of the light left and the power supply.

Oh and for feeding, some nice tongs with a bent tips work wonders in the edge
