Poccillapora spawned

I have three poccillapora in my 20 gallon long tank. One is a pink branching type, with neon green polyps and is four inches tall.

The second is a magenta and pink clumping type that is a two inch frag. I saw it spawn three days ago and thought it was neat.

The third is a base ball sized green clumping type and it just spawned and now my tank is cloudy.

This did not happen when my little magenta frag did this. Of course that one is much smaller in size. Is there anything that I need to do? Will this hurt my other corals in such a small tank. My clowns are going crazy eating the miniscule white stringy things and all my corals are very large and puffed up like they are feeding on it all.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Lucky you if the last one, the nice green with yellow base, spawned. Generally it's polyp bailout, not true spawning, so are you sure it spawned? Are you sure water params are ok? Could it be a bacterial bloom induced by carbon dosing or anything like that?

Watch the skimmer for overflows, perhaps run some carbon for a while in case there are any toxins in the tank. That's all I know to do.

I am assuming it did as it looked like the ones on youtube that did. My magenta one did it the other day. Poofed out a cloud of haze over the course of a few minutes and gave off these very small minicule white thin things. I looked it up and several sources I read sounded like that and I assumed it was spawning. It is a very healthy vibrant magenta frag and is very fuzzy and happy again.

Yes, today it was the baseball sized green and yellow one. Except it is huge and gave off lots of hazy stuff that clouded up my tank. It is still a bit cloudy, and it is several hours later. It also gave off these little minicule wormy short thread like things. My clowns were eating them all excited.

When my magenta one did this a few days ago it did not effect my tank or anything in it. But this one being so much bigger I am a bit worried. Everything looks happy. I cant seem to post a picture as a reply but will post one immediatly after this comment. I did change my filter floss but with spawn being so small I dont think it will catch anything. I dont run a skimmer or sump. I do have chem pure elite in my Aqua Clear will that help? My puple sea whip has had its polyps out every since it spawned.

I do a water change every Sunday morning. Should I do it early or just wait? Just keep an eye on things?

Here is a full tank shot I just took now. The water is still very hazy but everything looks ok and happy.

Haha, my green ones have spawned a few times, it is actually somewhat of a nuisance SPS. I still think it's pretty cool though!

I just tested for ammonia and Nitrate and both are at zero. Thanks so much for the encouragement. I will just keep a very close eye on it and have some water change water ready to go if needed. I also have a fresh chem pure I could put in but I try to get at least two months out of them. And the one in there has only been in for three weeks.

Very cool!!! I agree! Do you get little ones? Can you pop them off the rocks and put them on plugs?

Haven't tried popping them off yet, but they are everywhere in my tank and sump. I'll post a picture tomorrow of one of the bigger sump ones.

Looking forward to seeing what they look like. So do you consider them a problem in your system. I really like them and really dont want to get ride of them. Great easy nice looking coral for my tank. I have Current Orbit LEDs so my SPS coral choices are limited.

Here's a couple of bad pics, two new ones and an older one. I like them, I think they are cool. If you had a SPS only tank packed with expensive corals, then it might be a nuisance.

Thank you for posting the pictures of them! I like them too so will leave mine in my tank and see what happens. My green one and the magenta one I have really are beautiful and add a lot of color to my tank. They are very easy to care for and grow well. I never knew they could do this but dont mind either. Happy reefing!

  • 5 weeks later...

I just wanted to post an update for any interested. My green pocci did acutally spawn that day as I have many little green babies all over in my tank now on the rock work and here is one on my aquaclear uptake tube.

Only my ugliest poci has bailed. I sold my big colony of it but I have it on the back wall, showing up on a few rocks, pumps, etc. :) My bright green with a green yellow base has never bailed out, and my favorite, a purple polyp with green and purple base ... forget it.

Sometimes I wonder if there are more varieties of poci than are classified. If you look at my 29 thread you can see a big aquacultured poci with a cool crab in it. It doesn't look anything like my other pocis.
