Nano Clusters

Got bored and started messing around with "Evil Clusters". I know everyone does them for larger tanks,I wanted to try and make some up for nano guys !!! Let me know what you guys think and input on what should be changed !!!!

Cluster #1:

3x Nichia 45K 95 CRI Whites @ 700ma

2x Luxeon M Royal Blue @ 700ma

2x LGB Cool Blues @ 700ma

2x 410nm Violets @ 700ma

2x 430nm Hyper Violets @ 700ma

Cluster #2

2x Luxeon M Royal Blues @ 700ma

1x Luxeon M 45k @ 700ma

2x LGB Cool Blues @ 700ma

2x 410nm Violets @ 700ma

2x 430nm Hyper Violets @ 700ma

Neither of those are 'nano', especially at 700mA lol.

A good Bridgelux chip is going to still have better color than even the Nichia chips and cost less, and the 4000K Luxeon M from Steve's are still 70CRI.

I'm no led master and I no their are some on here but I would look at adding some lime green in their.

I'm actually doing another cluster and we speak with 2 limes in it.

I'm saying as the aspect of the size of the clusterlol, which with a big enough fan could be clustered pretty tightly. I think it'd still be nano size though. I'd think something this size would light a smaller tank (5-10g) pretty well.. You know me,I'm always about trying to bake shit lol :) also,do you think 500mA or be better for everything or what ?

The 'evil cluster' has really never been large ever since multichips came about. About the smallest cluster would be six LEDs - warm white, lime, royal blue, blue, cyan, violet. Your clusters above have 17 and 18, respectively. Dave has shown that you dont need large amounts of LEDs or high currents to achieve high PAR for a small distance. With a better heatsink that the ones he uses for his fixtures you could easily run ~30-35w passively and not need a fan at all.

My last clusters were very small (smaller than what you have pictured above) and I was actually limited by the strip nature of the enclosure or I could have made them smaller, they were 120x20mm. If I were to remake them how I see optimal now, they would be even smaller than that, and could be more round by clustering tighter.

Both clusters would be 11 LEDs,13 if I threw 2 limes into the equation. Which,I really don't think is bad. Yeah,if you could have them all on a board super tight together, but,no one has made Lux M's on a 3up yet lol.

A nano cluster would be:

2 x Royal Blue

1 x Blue

1 x Cyan

1 x Warm White

1 x Lime

1 x Violet

Thats is about as small a cluster as you can get. I may actually get around to building some of these soon... maybe ...

Now, if you could build a custom chip and do all those as Luxion Z's, it would be nano in size as well.

You can get smaller if you can change your brands around or footprints. But then you're looking at mounting costs if you can't find your chosen chips mounted.

If used those,I'd put the WW,Lime Violet all on a 3up. And then 2 more 3ups with RB,Cyan,TCB then 2 single Hypers.

Dangit Ben. You're making another secret light again, aren't you?

I wouldn't doubt it lol it's Ben hahaha.

If your gonna be like that, put 4 of those clusters per heatsink section and make them modular so they can be used lego like and connected to cover any size tank.

Edit: Oh yea, and I'd like them next Tuesday please...

I choose to interpret this as a yes to my question.

This one is a liiittttle different than before. :ninja:

I choose to take this as next Tuesday is a little premature.

The Luxeon M's from Steve's are a minimum 70 CRI. To my eyes they are around 75-80 actual. A neutral white LED with an actual 70 CRI looks really, really bad...typically those ANSI spec'd things or the cheap Chinese LED's from aquastyle.

Bridgelux do look better though in my side by sides.

The 90CRI Veros are a huge step up side by side, even more so than the 80CRI ones that were the 'standard' for a couple of years now. :)

I'm not worried about getting the best color rendition, honestly. So,to me 75-80 CRI isn't that much of a issue for me.

I'm not looking to use a Vero, what would you suggest ?!

The Vero :P

Besides the Vero lol come on meow !!! I really don't want to use a Vero on a application as small as mine.

Why is that? What is the difference besides having possibly worse color and being more expensive?
