Coral Pro Salt

Hi Folks,

According to the Coral Pro manual I need to add 725 grams of salt to 5 gallons to achieve a concentration of 35ppt. When I add that much I end up well over 50ppt. Any ideas?

Fish, non-coral inverts 1.021 30.6 ppt 33.4 g/l (1.4 lb/5 US gal)
Soft/LPS corals 1.023 33.0 ppt 36.0 g/l (1.5 lb/5 US gal)
SPS/Giant clams 1.025 35.0 ppt 38.2 g/l (1.6 lb/5 US gal)

When I add exactly 2 cups to 4g I get specific gravity of 1.025ppm. RSCP suggests 1/2 cup per gallon to achieve 1.025ppm. Hope that helps.

I'll give that a shot. Thanks!

I get exactly 1.025ppm every time with 1/2 cup per gallon. You should get the same result. I also never mix this salt for more than an hour since I have heard that it is not a good idea and I'm almost certain that I read that RSCP suggests the same. Good luck!

Make sure you mix it before you just pour it, sometimes powders settle. Also variation between batches. There's a lot of factors, just add as much as you need to get your PPT, if you go over just Q.S. with water it to get the S.G. you want.

Correct. Red sea states to mix it quick and use it quick.

Some people have stated that when they mix it for a long time, they get like a slime around the water or something like that.

One time I mixed it for more than one hour and it actually didn't have an effect at all lol

Why would anyone use a mix that would do that? Or a mix that is sensitive to mixing and can't be stored? I had issues with Kent salt mix--it would get funky floating things in it if it sat overnight. It looked like brown fish flakes. I switched to the spendy ESV 4 part system and will never use another salt mix. It is expensive, but worth every penny. I mix it up by measuring to 1/10th a gram and it is dead on every time. It looks just as clear as RODI when mixed and can be stored for at least a month (the longest I have has some sit). Almost no salt creep in the tank.

Although it sounds like more work for that salt it sounds like the best solution to having perfect params

Because it's not worth paying that much extra to have a clean garbage can of water and I'd rather be doing just about EVERYTHING else then putting together a salt mix. You asked. :)

It is pretty easy and doesn't take all that much time. It would be faster if I had a digital scale though. I have an old-school triple beam balance that is very accurate. I mix a 10 gallon batch of water on Sunday and fill up 10 one-gallon jugs I use during the week for WC's. I like to do frequent, smaller WC's for various reasons.

I will never go back to any other salt mix.

I did ask! I just can't get myself to add water to my tank that is dirtier than what I am changing out!

Maybe. Perfect measurement is important. Forget using a measuring scoop--too inaccurate. If you want consistency, you should weigh your mix whatever you may be using. I test all my water to confirm parameters and I have never noticed a difference batch to batch.

If I were using a one part mix, I would get a large container that the dry mix will fit in and I would stir the dry mix well to make sure nothing has settled. I would then measure out smaller quantities for whatever amount you normally use and store them in ziplocks. When time comes to mix water, just grab a ziplock and mix it up. I like to store my dry mix in buckets with tight lids and desiccant pucks.

When I first started I did none of that and my mixed water always had different parameters batch to batch.

Well, I only have two small tanks, and I only use 4G per week( 1G for the 10 and 3G for the 28G). I have a garage, but we park both of our cars inside of it, so no room for a big container of premixed water. My wife wouldn't allow it anyways. But if you have like a huge tank, then I can see where this would be an issue.

Interesting, it's actually not too bad in price if you have a smaller tank

RSCP yes.

I use coral pro and let it mix overnight.

I like being able to come home right after work and do my water change ASAP without having to wait at all, even 10, 20 minutes for my salt to mix. I also let it mix in my bathroom, with a lid mostly on, and the door mostly closed to keep my cat out of the water. Means it warms the water up so I don't need a heater.

Never had a problem with the water getting funky.

I just switched to the blue bucket and for the last 3 weeks have been using the same initial mix I made up. Ive been testing alk and mag and only have seen a slight dip in alk.

It never really made sense to me when salt companies claim it can't be mixed for long periods of time. Isn't the salt mixing in my tank after I do a water change?

I use and store coral pro salt never had any problems. I just eye mine. Fill the 5 gallon up half way check salinity if more water is needed I add it. Not a science real easy. I store it with a lid on it in a closet that's room temp out of the sun. Never had any problems I do two water changes a week. And I do get that brown stuff never bother tank though. And I googled it read interesting things about it too. Simple is always better do what's best for you and your tank each one is different. Hope that helps

I use this salt and store for up to a week with no issues. I normally only mix for about 30 minutes and than it sits ina bucket with a lid and a heater for up to a week before I use all of it. Havent had any issues yet and been using it for four months. I am going to test the alk right after mixing and than a few days later and see if anything changes. I am to curious why they say not to mix for longer than a certain period of time.
