JBJ NC 6 Transfer To IM Nuvo Fusion 40

As the title says I'm upgrading from my NC 6 to a Fusion 40. I'll elaborate on equipment later as I am at work and don't remember all of the specifics of the stuff I have bought so far. Tank, stand, light, skimmer, ATO, thermometer and a couple of other things are already purchased.

I still need rock and sand and am also formulating a game plan for the transfer. Looking for opinions on rock especially, but sand and move strategy also.

The NC 6 has been going for well over a year with a lot of stuff added back in July/August last year. Currently only 1 fish, a citron goby. One hermit and some softies too.

We (being myself and my 7 year old daughter) want to do a mix of black and gold sand. Looking at Bio-Activ Australian Gold and Black Beach live sand or maybe one of them live and one not. Will most likely seed with some sand from the NC 6. Probably going to lay some egg crate in for holding sand in place as much as possible.

Anybody ever tried mixing substrate colors? Does having egg crate down help keep them from migrating as much? Any thoughts on mixing live sand and dead sand?

On the rock I am planning on moving all of what is in the NC 6. I think it's around 8 lbs. I want to keep minimum rock, thinking I'd like to have 20-30 lbs total, max. I'm going to add a couple of Ocellaris Clowns (kid's choice) and another small fish or two (Tanaka's Wrasse is a possibility). Will that be enough rock?

I would like to add only dry rock and let the existing rock seed it. I have no problem waiting for everything to seed before adding more than the existing livestock. Any thoughts on setting up the new tank with sand and rock, letting it go for a week or two to see what levels look like then moving everything over at once? I would then let the tank sit for 6-8 weeks before adding any additional livestock.

Any suggestions or insights are welcomed. I am not in a hurry to do this, just want to do it with the least hassle involved. Thanks all.

Good choice of tank ;)

I just transferred my nanocube28 and my evolve 8

Into it so my transfer was pretty easy. But I did add a bag

Sand into the mix and 10 gallons of new saltwater.

Yes, it can look great. No issues chemically, do whatever you like :)

Should not be an issue, that is commonly done. Much cheaper, but you will not have as much Bacteria to start with.

NO EGGCRATE! IT WILL TRAP DETRITUS AND PREVENT YOU FROM MIXING THE SAND (TO CLEAN IT)

Rock quantity is a very personal thing, with different techniques and aesthetic preferences. If I were you, I would use the LR from the existing tank and get 25lbs dry rock from ReefCleaners ($50) to supplement and aquascape the Nuvo 40

Sounds good! Yes, there will be a cycle (Although perhaps reduced) but waiting is key :)

I hope I helped!

If you're going to have the 6g set up while setting up the IM40 you could always give a few weeks to settle in before the transfer !

Oh, definitely. The 6 is an established tank. I won't move anything until the 40 is perfect.

In that case I wouldn't stress about the move at all. Just try and match the params the best you can with the 6 and 40 and you should be fine. I moved all my stuff from a cad4 to an IM 10 just like that and everything was just fine. BTW the 40 fusion is an awesome tank...I LOVE mine. Haha good luck!
