Avast Porthole XL First Impressions

I bought one of the Avast Marine Works Top-Down Porthole, XL, and it came today. Threw it on my D3200 with 85mm Micro and took some shots.

 

I really need a step stool or something. Hard to get up over my tank.

Green monti. Fringing because I'm trying to handhold it... I need to figure out a way to use a tripod and keep the lights on... Tricky.

 

 

 

 

I love the idea. One thing I would REALLY change is make the front element threaded. Use an o-ring to seal it or something. Because it came pretty dirty (dust and water spots inside the device). I think either it came scuffed or I scuffed it trying to clean it. I rinsed it with water first then used a micro fiber cloth to dry. But it's hard to tell what happened since it's pretty hard to get my fat hands in there. Easily corrected for in Photoshop, the scuffs were really tiny. It would be much easier to clean properly if the front glass was threaded.

 

Otherwise, totally worth the money. I can get pics I just couldn't get before.

Oh, I should note that I mounted it WAY up the lens instead of on the focus ring because I was already on my tippy toes trying to get the shot. No way I could see anything if mounted properly.
