New Pico Discussion

OK folks, some really great things have happened lately (some not so great, too), but in short I will be able to set up a small pico again here soon. It'll be in my office at work. (tl;dr is at the bottom)

My plan is a <4g tank. I pretty much have everything I need except the tank.

I will be using my AC70, PicO Skim 2.0, coral compulsion full spec Par30 bulb (I'm going to make a little hood for it I think), a 25w heater, and intank media basket. I'll be going bare-bottomed, ~1lb of LR per gallon, and it will likely be zoas, shrooms/rics, and maybe a pompom crab.

My issue is which tank I should go with. I could always go another 5.5g tank (they are cheap) but that would prevent me from staying less than 4g. I REALLY like the little 3g JBJ picotopes, but I'm afraid that the AC70 will be just big enough that I won't be able to use the skimmer in conjunction.

The next thing of concern is that I'd like to be able to make a small black box, like the PicO aquaclear boxes, that houses and shields the intake tube for the AC70 and the skimmer itself. Chris at PicO says he thinks I should go with an entire false wall, AIO-style, and not use the AC70. But that means I just need more stuff to buy. I'd end up buying the tank, the false wall, and the equipment to make it an AIO and I may as well just buy the CADLights 4g AIO if that's what I end up doing...

I'd prefer to stick with everything I already have. I think I might try and make a little black "Overflow" out of acrylic to house the AC70 intake tube and the Skimmer together.

tl;dr - which small tanks (bare, rimless, non-AIO) are people digging right now? And what kind of black acrylic do people use for custom work and where do I get it?

Picotope with AC70 fudge mod - skip the skimmer you don't need it

If I use the intank media basket, think i can rock chaeto with that? I suppose I am planning 50% water changes weekly, so it would be kind of silly to use the skimmer.

I don't see why not , just remove the center tray. I used the mesh for cross stitch to make guard to hold the macro in when I ran mine. Siliconed it in place and left the rest of the filter empty, it worked like a champ

Oh wait , I lied . I had my heater in there too with a little bit of floss where the intake feeds into the filter

truaqua... I have heard the name but i am not sure of their reputation.

oh i can keep sps with my current equipment. The only thing i would use from the jbj setup is the tank itself

I have a 14 inch cube and a 14 inch rectangular tank from them. The quality is pretty d@mn solid. Clarity and silicone is up there with ada

That's even cheaper than truaqua and free shipping!

I have a CAD zen rimless you can have. 14"x10"x10" or maybe a littler smaller?

I might do that, but it's a bit bigger than I wanted. Ben has a Mr. Aqua bowfront 3g I may buy from him.

PicO responded to me with a quote of ~$60 for the wall, pump, sealant, and fittings. I would only need to supply tape to seal it all in place. I dunno why I would have to use tape, but I'm not well-versed in these things. I think I will probably just go with a bare tank, bare-bottom, black back and the PicO aquaclear tube thingy to keep that hidden and skim the surface.
