Yup downsized from a 300 now 24 nano lol. I love these little setups. I have 2 24 nanos and one 12 gal setup. I'm looking forward to seeing other setups and any mod filter ideas. But, then he requested the payment be sent as a "gift". After going through dozens of sales through Planted Tank, this immediately raised red flags for me. I understand some people do not like paying the PayPal fees, so I offered to cover the costs and pay with "Goods and Services". After this, his responses were not clear regarding why he needed the payment sent as "gift" and I decided to not do business with this man. This is the email he gave me for PayPal payment: chad24duke@yahoo.com To prevent stuff from this happening in the future, I really think someone needs to make a sticky with a warning about sending payments via PayPal as a "gift". I am quite new here, but I have yet to see any mention to this in either of the sales forums. If I wasn't made aware of this through Planted Tank, I too would have fallen for this scam. I feel sorry for the people who have lost money to this guy. Link to comment
cromag27 Posted May 6, 2015 Share Posted May 6, 2015 I agree. other forums have stickies that state sales via the forum have to be made through PayPal, and never send as a gift. when I sell I always tell buyers to NOT send as a gift and I am the one who pays the fees. I find it cheap and tacky that sellers request the buyer to cover the fees. Link to comment
cromag27 Posted May 6, 2015 Share Posted May 6, 2015 so this reminds me of a scenario i was recently involed in. on rc i posted that i was looking to buy a light unit. i posted it in the local phx forum. i was contacted by mrduke and they said they had the light i was looking for and they could send pics via email. so i got some pics that were sent from 'kim rush' (kimreef24@yahoo) who was mrduke's wife. she also said her husband goes by duke431 on r2r. after we agree on a price she asks me to send payment as a gift. i sent it for goods. she actually refunded my money and said the ONLY way she could print a tracking number was if i sent payment as a gift. i asked how she was sending the light unit, she said via ups and she also works for ups. i then advised her that all ups come with tracking numbers regardless. she continued to try and convince me to send the payment as a gift. i refused and told her i work for the federal goverment and can't be a part of any type of fraud. never heard back from her. me: I think I got a refund from you? her: correct I refunded.Send money option to family and friends That way i can use UPS tacking with paypal label. her: Friends payment will allow the lable t work. me: Apparently I am not protected if I sent it as friends. her: But your using a credit card you are protected. Tho im not if the pkg gets lost but thats why im going tohave insurannce for it. Paypal is like a business and trys to get their fee. Now if this was on ebay i would "NOT" recommend a transaction like that beause your Credit card will not protect you. me: I guess if a buyer is purchasing tangible goods or services, you have to send the money under that category. Sending money as a gift is not in exchange for any tangible goods or services. I guess it would be like a birthday present or something. PayPal says specifically to never send money as a gift if you are buying an item. her: If you linked your bank with your account i could use paypal UPS shipping lable that will also cover my behind and not get scammed over with a buyer statting item never received. But since you dont im stuck.I WORK for UPS so i know what im talking about here.Stuck with that option.does that clear it up some? me: You can still send ups and have a tracking number that will protect you. How you accept payment should not effect the ability to track a package? me: I can connect it to my bank account. But I still can't send the payment as a gift if it's not a gift. That's fraudulent. Gives me some ease of mind to have Buyer Protection .(Three days later) Hello? Are you not okay with that? Him: Going to need to contact paypal and change my setup for shipping account than. Not sure if thats possible. Me: I am confused with what you're referring to. You mean you've registered your account to ship via UPS? And that requires me to send money as a "Gift and Friends/Family"? I've sent packages via PayPal before. When the buyer sends the money as "Goods and Services" I have the option to select a button that says 'Print a Shipping Label". It automatically enters in the buyers PayPal address and sends them a tracking number in a email when its completed. Him: (crickets) Link to comment
