dcbaros
So I just set up a new tank with a Bubble Magus Curve 5 skimmer. All it does is constantly overflow. Its been doing this for the last 2 days. Is this normal? If there is a very light bio load will it do this? I have read a ton of threads about the subject and they all say to raise the skimmer. I have tried several different positions and nothing works. Link to comment
gus6464
Is the skimmer brand new? Is it broken in? My Vertex Omega overflowed for a month until it finally broke in. Some skimmers go insane until they break in. Link to comment
dcbaros
Yeah its brand new. I figured it was break in but my previous skimmers never did this. Link to comment
Nstocks
Mine did the same thing for two days. Now it's barley skimming at all! (low bio-load). How high is the waterline with the skimmer? Link to comment

Nstocks
Currently its 5. I have tried everything between 5 and 9. Isn't 5" too low? I have mine just above 9" with it fully open. Link to comment
dcbaros
Isn't 5" too low? I have mine just above 9" with it fully open. I think so. Im just trying different things. If you search for the problem the most common resolution is that the recommended height is wrong so raise it up. Link to comment
cromag27
Recommended water height is 9.5"-11". Link to comment
dcbaros
Recommended water height is 9.5"-11". I know. Link to comment
nidding
Just let it run itself in. If you haven't already you can let it run for a couple of hours in some vinegar to clean out any oils and junk from manufacture. That should speed up things a bit. Link to comment
cromag27
I know. Then why are you trying 5"-9"???? Link to comment
Neebles
Then why are you trying 5"-9"???? Do you have this skimmer? Maybe you have had luck running it at the recommended depth but I have never had one that I haven't had to raise well above that, including the curve 7 I currently use. Link to comment
dcbaros
Then why are you trying 5"-9"???? As I explained earlier, various posts on the subject say that the suggested depth is wrong and it works better at shallower depths. Link to comment
cromag27
As I explained earlier, various posts on the subject say that the suggested depth is wrong and it works better at shallower depths. Maybe for some people, but I would try within the recommended range first. that's why it's the recommended range. Link to comment
bdevillier19
I run my curve 5 in 7" of water and it works great. Did you run the skimmer in a vinegar bath before you put it in the sump? I did with mine and didn't have any overflow issues. But that could just be my skimmer, who knows. Link to comment
cromag27
Since your setup is new, wait a little longer to allow it to break in. I have 3 different bm skimmers and they all operate within the recommended water depths. mileage may vary, but until the skimmer breaks in, the best starting point is still 9.5"-11". you mentioned that you tried 5"-9". have you tried 9.5"+? I've had skimmer take a couple weeks to break in. Link to comment
