Cloudy Water

We have just purchased a used Nano Tank it is a Nano Cube 28 HQI. Its a great tank and just what we have been looking for. However when we put everything together and placed water in the tank we knew that it was going to be a little cloudy and thought after about 48 hours it would clear itself up, just like our 55 gallon does.

Well its been 7 days and its still cloudy. I have tried many different things to do that I have found on other forums, but nothing is working.

Can anyone help me and let me know what I can do or what Im doing wrong?

We have tried many things such as running the filter floss through the system. Another site suggested using Poly Fil from Walmart. We did this for 4 days and nothing got better. The gentleman that we got the tank from said that he was running 2 pieces of cut carbon through top, middle was pieces of little live rock, and bottom was the ceramic rings. He showed us what to buy at PetCo and we got new ceramic rings and carbon.

We have done a 5 gallon water change 2 days ago and nothing, cause that is what the fish store suggested.

We are ready to pull our fish out and put in our other tank, so that we can start from scratch.

Get rid for the ceramic rings they are a nitrate factory. Just run new floss everyday and keep the carbon pads. It probably is a bacteria bloom from the move. If it doesn't clear up you might want to run a uv light

Ok. I have changed all the compartments to the floss(poly Fil) and left the carbon in one of the compartments.

Should I continue to change daily until it clears up? and do I just need to keep the floss in there for the duration that the tank is up and running?

As far as the light, I am waiting for shipment of some new lights as we only have the blue light in the tank working....

Thought this nano tank was going to be easy on us, and it seems that are 55 gallon with Casscade 1500 filter is better.

Thanks for your help.

Clean or change out the floss frequently. A clarifier will help the floss filter out what's making the water cloudy.

Floss needs changing every day. They poly I would rinse with ro water when u change the floss. Nanotranks are harder to keep then larger setups due to water volume. They are way more prone to swings. Just need to be religious with wc.

Don't worry about light rt now don't need it for the cycle. What skimmer are you using

Sounds like a bacterial bloom. you'll have to wait it out. did you add dried rock to the tank? or was it live?

A couple more thoughts...

Don't worry, nano tanks can be as easy, or even easier, than larger tanks. This really isn't a filter problem. It's a bacterial problem. As people have pointed out, it will go away on its own (or you could use an UV sterilizer, or clarifier to help it get rid of it quicker).

Nano tanks are harder to keep then larger setups due to water volume. They are way more prone to swings.

As Kevin points out, they need to be strictly maintained or they could give you problems. But I don't consider them harder, just more volatile. However, one of the nice things about a nano tank is that large water changes are more feasible.

I also have a few questions. Sounds like the tank is just a few days old but has a fish in it already. Are you cycling this tank with fish or are you using fully cured live rock (an established bio-filter)?

Did the sand come from another tank or is it new?

Is there any ammonia? How about nitrate or phosphate? If the tank is still establishing its nitrogen cycle, you should transfer the fish to your other tank (until ammonia is undetectable) instead of subjecting it to toxic ammonia.

We purchased the tank from a guy at a yard sale. It was a deal that was too good to pass up. He stated that he never had any problems with the tank. When we got it home and cleaned it up we noticed that only some of the lights worked. And that one light that works is the Blue Light. We placed sand in the tank that day and then purchased 30 gallons of water from local fish store. We have always gotten our water from him. The rocks that are placed in their are not live rock at all. Just rocks that we have found on the local beaches and have had in our other tank with no problems.

We had it up for about a week before putting fish in it, and fish store tested and said that it was ok for fish to be placed in it. So we did.

We are very novice users when it comes to fish tanks. We have a 55 gallon that is doing great.

So are not sure what is going on.

We were told by the fish guy that we need to drain tank, and put those fish in our 55 gallon and do a complete water change and new sand.

I am waiting on lights and new filter things to come in mail.
