While I would normally agree that things usually look best when one side is slightly taller than the other I think that there's enough distinction between the 2 that the left side serves as the initial focal point. Why the 3 month cycle? That rock looks pretty clean I think any curing should be very minimal. By all means if you want to have a long cycle go for it, but with some careful planning and possibly some bacterial starter like bio-spira you should be able to move things up considerably. Gives it a little more depth and also the asymmetrical look which I love as well. Link to comment

Good luck! Rock was really clean, I have yet to measure phosphates in the tank. I started with Dr. Tims and have continued to feed with pure ammonia so I know it is definitely cycled. Two reasons for holding back: 1) dealing with some algae issues on some frags I have from a previous build so trying to keep all that out of the new tank and 2) Still deciding on a light for the tank. I'll likely go with a duo from Dave at nano box but I am still deliberating. Thanks for the kind words everyone! Link to comment

You must be a very patient person lol Yeah i rushed into a 65 gallon reef ready setup, my first saltwater tank, back in september and regretted it so i decided to take this one slow and make sure I get it exactly how I want it. Anyone have suggestions for coral placement? Im hoping to go full blown mixed. Right now I've got mostly zoa frags with a few lps, and one monti undata. I want to eventually get some branching sps. I had a problem with high nitrates and phosphates in my last tank from the live rock so I have never actually gotten around to placing corals in a tank. Link to comment

Yup same here man, I'm gonna be starting fresh with BRS reef saver rock and and IM fusion 20 and start right this time, I had high ohosphates and my live rock got nasty so I want pest free and algae free rock, I'll be cycling the rocks in a bucket till my tank gets here I really like your idea for a mixed reef, the green birds nest is a personal favorite sps Link to comment

My whole right island is one piece that I chiseled into shape so its pretty easy to work with. I like the birds nest variety as well and I've heard they are relatively forgiving. My old rock didn't have pest or algae but the Nitrates always stayed around 40 and the phosphate always above 1 ppm. I just found the whole setup on craigslist and made an impulse buy and immediately regretted it. Link to comment

I made the mistake of not letting it soak a little in rodi so I had this film of what I can only assume to be the dust from the rock but once I scraped it off it was no problem Link to comment

Rock So with no light you think the rock would stay white? you are probably right. It is probably micro algae and detritus build up that stains it. I always thought it had to do with the bacteria but thats obviously not right. Anyone else have any ideas or reasons? Link to comment
ajmckay Posted May 4, 2015 Share Posted May 4, 2015 I started my tank with dry rock and for the most part the rock stayed white until I introduced some coral frags and pieces of LR that had various algaes on it. There was a brief time that the rocks turned sort of brown due to diatom bloom, but didn't last that long for me. Now they're starting to turn brown more with greens and pinks and other colors but when a turbo snail clears a path it goes back to white - probably will until a calcerous algae forms. New to this site. But you picked up some really nice rock. And you arranged it really nicely. Lovin all the caves and nooks.
