I use the bigger square 165W dimmable leds on my 90g. Grows SPS, anemones, and clams. Have a no-name ebay LED over my 30g frag tank that's growing softies and acans like CRAZY

TANKS! Seems like a decent little LED setup for a 5G and all my corals are within the "low to medium" light range. I just need to upgrade from the mediocre Fluval LED strip. But I don't want to go from mediocre to mediocre. However spending $200+ on a 5G seems overkill. I'll save that investment for my next (and BIGGER) tank.

Sounds good to me. I honestly don't see a much of a difference between growth of expensive lights and cheap lights.

This is good. I am also looking at a light that's on sale locally. $199 Dimmable CR108P, http://reefcorner.com/product/captive-reef-series-90w-programmable-reef-light/

I really like this light, but

1) don't need all the features...just want them for funzies

2) Even though this can be dimmed down for my small tank (5gal), I'm worried this is too much

3) planning to upgrade, but not for awhile

Thoughts? Lighting is still a weak area for me.

I'm still debating...and waiting for my 1st paycheck with my raise! That will be the deciding factor. I REEEEEEEALY want this fancy programable LED unit...but then....is this truly overkill and a huge waste of money for just "cool toy"? Should I buy the eBay cheap-o LED unit which will get good results?

Heck, my corals are doing surprisingly well with the stock fixture!

I've got no doubt that the ebay light would provide plenty of light for your tank, the only downside I see is that you only have one channel. The one feature of LEDs that I am really digging is the ability to tweat the colour spectrum with two separate dimmers

A product rep from Current USA is the president of my local club. He claims that light will support softies, lps, zoa's. He advised against using it for sps. It has nice features for the price.

I used that light on my Fluval Spec V when I had it running, at about 75% blue channel and 50% white I was able to keep easy SPS (such as montipora caps and birdsnest). Considering the tank was rather shallow it did a very nice job. You could check out my old thread from the link in my sig.

I went ahead and bought it. It's an idea tank for my Fluval Spec V (which is heavily hard-scaped and much of my corals are pretty high).

18W should be plenty for my LPS and Softies. I don't have any SPS, prob won't get any unless I get another $5 frag bargain and I am already looking at next tank.

NanoClown I will definitely check out your thread.

I may have to move my Xenia. He is up at the top, about 6" from this light and he is very happy and "pulse-y". Took a month to make him happy. LOL. Everything else, especially my Duncan, is doing surprisingly well, so I'm excited to see them really thrive. I'll update my own build thread (that is not terribly exciting right now) once I get this fixture installed. Very excited about programmable lighting...which is one of the things that lured me into reefing....fancy corals and fancy lights....oooooooooooooooh.

Thanks everyone, this was a good discussion.

At least they're cheap enough, that if you want to keep SPS/anemones it's not too expensive to just grab another one.
