Vortech MP10 vs Jebao RW-4

Hey guys,

I know this has been asked before, so bear with me here. This is for a IM Nuvo Fusion 10g mixed reef.

I have the Vortech MP10es and it does its job well. My main complaint is the noise. My god. It is noisy. Yes, yes, I have adjusted it many a time; cleaned it; turned it 2 degrees left and right etc. It's been running for about 5 months and it's just noisy.

I have gone through three MP10's in there past few years (all worked great) but hoping to get that golden ticket that is silent as some say they are. They are all the same noisy beasts.

Here's my dilemma.

The new QD drivers are out now, and I was super excited to 'upgrade' mainly for the quietness (duh) BUT I just don't think it will make a big enough difference for the MP10. The so-called reviews out there mainly focus on the MP40 and the ones that mention the MP10 mostly say "It wasn't that loud to start with"

Maybe I have super-sensitive hearing or I am just a whiney bitch, but I need silence!

I am now just thinking of putting that in storage and getting the Jebao RW-4. I like randomness and wave motions and not a steady stream, so controllability like this is important along with silentness.

What do you guys think?

i love both. i have an mp10 on the side of my tank and a rw-4 on the backwall. yes, the rw-4 is much quieter and has the random currents and such, but i also like the mp10 for obvious reasons. sorry im not too much help :)

I can hear my RW4's ramping up an down in the 40B. doesn't bother me. but if you have sensitive hearing could be an issue. also are you using the rubber spacer between dryside an tank ? I assume yes....just checking.

I have my MP10 since 2013(December) and it's very quiet. I can't even run at more than 20% in my Fusion 10G since my SPS polyps don't extend beyond that. I ran a WP10( which is the older cousin of the RW4) for about 5 months and it worked very well. What I personally didn't like about the WP10 was the wire inside the tank, the small heat transfer and it was a PITA to clean it. That's why I bought another MP10 for my NC 28G and that one is very silent too. Anyways, the fan on the minitide is much louder than the MP10 and the ghost skimmer is even louder than the minute fan!

I must add that I already had a WXM module, so I control both pumps from one Apex Jr, so that is very convenient too.

You have a white box MP10ES, right? Then you can spend $50 dollars on the QuietDrive upgrade. Sometimes that makes a big difference. I have an MP10ES and an RW-8 on my 40 breeder and the RW-8 is now pretty much silent while the MP10 is generally quite quiet as well. Before that however, I had a pair of MP10s that were really annoying. Some times you get lucky with an MP10 and sometimes you don't.

I do like the MP10 performance, but it's the noise. I like silence when possible, or as close to it as possible :P

I am not using the rubber spacer as per the manual suggestion; although I have tried it to see if it made a difference, and it did not. It's the dressed 100%, but out of the 3 I had, they were all whiney (that whirring sound everyone talk about) especially when ramping. I know noise is going to happen as there are moving parts, but it's past the verge of infuriating

I'm also running mine around that percentage. I'm not crazy excited for the wire in the tank, but i've never had issues with heat, so the little bit extra generated by the RW-4 wouldn't worry me.

I must have the worst luck when it comes to these things..

I had the original, the wireless, the 'newer' soft touch one and they all performed great but were/are all noisy. I would consider the QD as I stated in my OP, but I really don't trust the MP10 would be "up to 90% quieter" and it seems the majority of benefits occur with the MP40 from my readings.

Yea, this whole luck of the draw thing is what is an noting me. That's a quality control issue in my mind. Even if the RW-4 doesn't last more than year, at least I would have my sanity :P

You don't have any other noisy equipment installed on your tank? Like I mentioned before, the minitide and ghost skimmer are many decibels louder than my MP10.

Not really. The Kessil A160WE fan is only audible when I am about 3 inches from it, and my return pump (Sicce Syncra Silent 0.5) makes no noise at all. I can only feel the slight vibration when my hand pressed by the bottom return area and can only see its on from the water flow!

Nothing else makes noise in my system except the MP10 - which isn't only audible, but LOUD - like I can hear it in the next room loud ramping up and down - this is only at maybe 20-25% power BTW. Constant whirring - I would compare it to a less noisy/muffled version of having a playing card taped on your bicycle tire.

How old is your MP10? I've owned 6 or 7 of them over the years and never had an issue with overly loud units. I compared them to a normal desktop computer fan. I'm about to pick up a QD model since I need a new MP10 anyways. I'm interested to see the difference because I've yet to see it in person.

This is my second mp10 and they both are very quiet. Even at 40%, I can't hear the one on my NC 28G running, unless I get very close to it (like inches). It sounds like you have been very bad luck with yours. Sorry!

I'm not at home and can't check the manufacture date but I purchased it in November 2014. PLEASE report your findings of the QD!!

Oh well. Must just be my luck. Sucks to be me LOL

I'm probably a few months out until I get it up and running right now. Where the tank is going I am finishing some remodeling work which has to wait until end of June.

I find the older my vortech gets the quiter it is. I have one mp10 ive been running for a year and one I just set up a couple months ago and the new one is way louder than the old one but it is getting quieter as it breaks in. I have them in anti sync mode at 100% reefcrest and I only hear the newer pump above ~80 percent.

I have heard of people doing this and it's still loud?

I've heard that as well. I'm guessing they got the wrong bearings, or the noise was from a different issue.

I have a new QD MP10 that I replaced a working RW4 with. Night and day regards water movement. The RW4 was quiet, but I could hear it ramp up and down. The MP10 I can't hear running unless at 100%, which is too much flow for me.

The MP10 moves water like a beast in a different way than the RW4. Kinda like a .45 vs a .22. You get a good whump with the .45 and a fast crack with the .22. The MP10 seems to move all the water in the tank where the RW just squirted water around the tank.

Also, I just slapped the MP10 on the tank right out of the box and did zero adjustment.

I'm with you on the noise. I can't use them anymore. I swear I have some psychic connection with them. I switched to jebao's some time ago and it was the most appreciated upgrade I've ever done with my tank.

I've had a lot of vortechs, MP40's and MP10's, and they're all loud IMO.

I'm not the only one! I actually just finished ordering the RW-4 as I can't take it anymore.

I was contemplating the QD upgrade, but it seems there are always two sides; The "OMG, This MP10 is noisy!" or "I can't hear it unless I put my ear right to it" There's no in-between and I can't trust the other side <_<:D 3 pumps, and they all sound the same. I think I know what is noisy to me.

Maybe when Ecotech redesigns their pumps, i'll consider it, but until then I'll need some proof in the form of dB.

Looking to sell you MP10 then? I am looking for a good deal on one, pm me if this is something that might work for you

Mine are pretty loud over 60% but the tank is in the living room where we're never really at anyways so the noise isn't that much of an issue. If the tank was in my room or office I'd probably throw them out the window. I did order the quiet drivers and am really anxious to see how much of a difference they make.

I have both a Jebao RW-4 and an MP10W in my IM Fuision 40. While this tank is only cycling it does have live sand and Dry Rock in it. I have the Jebao on the right side and the MP10W on the left side. I can not hear either one unless I get up next to them, about 1 foot away. I have the MP10 up at 60-80% depending on the time of day, and the same with the RW-4. I definitely think the options are better with the MP, but the RW seems to be able to move more water and at 1/4 of the price. So far I love them both, ill update after I've used them for a little longer.

For the love of god please reply here or make a thread! I am really looking forward to hearing your impressions. :haha: I really love the MP10 for its modes and small footprint, but yea, my tank is near me for a lot of the day, and drove me to buying the Jebao for now at least.

You lucked out! Or I am unlucky. I'm happy that you have such quiet operation for these units. I really hope the Jebao is quieter. Depending on some more thorough/truthful reviews of the QD, I may upgrade in the future.
