Should I get a Percula or Maroon?

I've been wanting a clownfish that's gets hosted by one of my anemones for a long time. However, after trying 4 different ocellaris none of them want anything to do with any of my 3 btas (one of them being 8"+).

So now I'm trying to decide the route to go. I know a maroon will host in the bta for sure, however I HATE aggressive fish. I can't handle any fish aggression at all. So I don't think a maroon is for me.

My other option is to get a percula and pick up a H. Crispa that it *hopefully* gets hosted in.

Which gamble do you guys think I should take? The gamble of an aggressive maroon, or the gamble of the percs not hosting? Keep in mind that I prefer the look of the percs also (along with the docility).

Thanks,

Andrew

If you prefer the look of the percs then go with those. If it doesn't take after a while, get rid of it and try something else but you should still go with what you like.

A lot of the tank raised clowns don't seem to care about hosting nems. I have an Allardi, which looks a lot like a Clarkii and I love him/her. You are often able to find them around the size of a nickle or quarter and I personally prefer their body shape to occelaris and maroons.

I have 5 fish in my tank and the allardi is the most passive of all of them, he/she just wants to be everyone's friend...unfortunately only the Chalk bass and jawfish won't try and bully him. My allardi hosts a big monti cap but I haven't tried a nem.

Clarkii or too aggressive still?

I like that Clarkiis will host in literally anything immediately, however I don't like how they look.

I believe I will go with perculas. My LFS has a beautiful Soloman island percula pair (both good size) for 40 or 50$.

For the love of Mike, clowns don't host anything....The Nem/powerhead/whatever hosts them. ;P

If you check my first post, I made a good attempt at using the correct terminology. However, I struggle to create proper sentences when you refer to the clowns as the ones being hosted.

No worries mate, I was only busting your balls... Cheers

Ps I wasn't "picking" on you specifically

Go with the Percula. Maroons and Clarkii can be mean. Although all clowns can be terirtorial A lot of designer clowns will host a bta.

give them some time It doese'nt happen over night

Yeah I had a pair of davinci clowns for 8 months with a bta and its like they didn't know it was there. My buddy had a tomato and perc and only the tomato takes up residence in a bta, and a toadstool, and pretty much anything else for that matter. He is a real jerk though

I originally got a maroon but soon realized how aggressive it was to my hand. switched them out for a pair of occelaris.

How long have you been giving the clowns? It took my Occy's several months before they moved in.

If you can get a wild caught perc or occy, that would be the way to go.

Stay away from a maroon since you don't want aggression.

The first pair of occys got 8 months and the 2nd pair got 4 months.

My LFS sold the percula pair and didn't have any other ones I liked. I went against my better judgement and got a baby maroon that was rather friendly. So far he hasn't left my smaller RBTA. My big RBTA got annoyed and closed up right before putting the maroon in. I think he'll probably move over to the big anemone tomorrow.

None of my fish go near the big anemone, so hopefully no one get's close enough for the clownfish to get angry at.

Maybe you could trade the maroon in when she gets big. If its a baby, it won't be nasty.... yet. Someday she may draw blood. :D

She can bite me all she wants. Just don't touch my bristletooth tang!

What size tank are we talking? Maroons are the devil so you will probably need to remove it eventually unless its a fairly large tank. Its amazing how large maroon clowns get...I have seen full grown ones at the LFS and I couldn't believe they can get to be about the size of your hand.

Obviously you have never had a big maroon bite you.

90g tank with

1x lawnmower blenny

1x sixline wrasse

1x bristletooth tang

1x maroon clown

lots of rocks. I have no trouble removing the clown if needed.

I have a maroon clown with similar fish to you, six line, bristletooth tang and i also have a pygamy dwarf angel and a bangai cardinal. Never had any aggression from the maroon, i just picked one which was with plenty of fish from my lfs. He hosted the anemone straight away

If you only have a single clown then it's a she by now. :)

Remember the issues with aggressive only show up when they start laying eggs. My big female false percula will kick the crap out of any fish that comes close to her lair. She is hosted by the back overflow, just above the big anemone she has ignored for years.

If I had a nano tank I think I would have lost a few fish by now, and frankly she's pretty passive compared to a lot of clowns. IMO Maybe if the anemone gets bigger she might notice.

My female Maroon not only bites me, she has also learned a new trick recently, which is splashing water all over me! And now that my tank is rimless, she doesn't even have to aim. She is easily 4 inches.
