onefang
So I am super bored at work and was looking around at was to replace the AC50 that I have with something a little more discrete, and without drilling, etc.. So I fired up sketchup (yeah my sketchup skils suck big time) and drew this up. I was inspired after pulling out my wonderfully beautiful intank basket from the AC50 last night to change filter floss. I though, damn wouldn't it be badass to have an internal overflow box with the pump in the bottom, and an intank basket over the top for filter floss and purigen/CPE? Wouldn't it be righteous if it were only 7 x 4 x 2 so it could fit in a corner inconspicuously in a lot of rimless tanks? Keep in mind that the hole on the right is for a loc-line fitting, and parts of this thing are out of scale. I also haven't really thought about how it would attach to the tank (magnet mount perhaps?), or which pump would fit in this footprint. Good idea/bad idea? Wondering if maybe I should approach inTank to fab something up? Link to comment
tetraodon
interesting design, i think itll work, the pump that came with my evo 4 would fit but really under powered for anything larger than a 10 Link to comment
onefang
I was thinking that you might be able to squeeze one of the smaller Cobalt MJ pumps, or maybe a Sicce Syncra 0.5. Maybe even a hydor pico evo-mag 180 might be able to turn it over enough to at least get some mechanical filtration going. Honestly, I think to keep the thing small I would have to go with a lower flow pump, not hoping to get all the tanks flow from this guy(it would be cool though). I'd be happy not looking at (and hearing)the aquaclear, with the understanding that I might still have to run a small powerhead along side it. Link to comment
tetraodon
maybe you can make a bracket on the back so you can adjust the height of the unit. Link to comment
JR!
current usa used to make this very thing a while ago. might be worth looking for one. but yeah the design is awesome Link to comment
onefang
Ah yes.. I totally forgot about the subcurrent. Must have been in my subconscious mind somewhere Man.. i want one of these.. I guess the main difference, is with my design, there is potentially enough room next to the media basket for a heater.. and the output is near the top, which I like a little better. Link to comment
russ722
I think its a killer idea.I'm in same boat (no sump and have a 110 aquaclear in tired of looking at.I say go for it.would be much cleaner looking. Link to comment
JR!
i would love to see you make one just like you designed. id buy one email chris@picoaquariums and see what he can do for you Link to comment
onefang
I think I will do that. I will let you know what shakes out Link to comment
Chief Reefer
looks very similar to the saltwater conversion marine-pak for the fluval tanks: http://saltwater-conversion.com/products/marine-pac-3 interesting design Link to comment
dgphelps
Funny, I am designing something very similar for a 10 gallon. How were you planning to attach it in tank? I've heard how hard silicone with glass and acrylic is. I was thinking of making the box to hold a heater, some floss, and 1-2 hydor 260 gph pumps and then sanding the bottom and back of the acrylic to then silicone or even superglue to the glass. I have the 10 gallon with a kyrlon black painted back all ready for it. Link to comment

I was thinking of a thin magnet mount, but I am having trouble sourcing coated magnets that are thin, but still strong enough to hold something like that in place. The other option is designing some type of bracket that isn't fugly that would allow you to hang it on the tank edge, and would allow adjustment for water level. Link to comment
dgphelps
Couldn't you just coat the small magnets in something like clear fingernail polish or silicone? I made some tiny algae cleaning magnets from ceramic magnets, they don't rust in water but they are also not very strong. I hope to have mine built by this weekend, and have sorted out the attachment method too. Link to comment
onefang
I suppose you could coat them yourself, but I was hoping for something that would last long term. I was thinking of using plasti-dip, or maybe even epoxy coating them which would really last. Link to comment
dgphelps
Funny, I almost suggested plastic-dip but I wasn't sure if it was reef safe when submerged. Link to comment
russ722
Post pics guys,I'm looking for something like this ,I've looked all over for the current usa"s version and can't find any for sell. Link to comment
Alkomist
i currently have a 40B set up with a HOB Penguin filter. im looking to rid of it and my heater from the display, so im currently working on something similar to this idea. i went to home Depot and picked up a 4" ABS pipe. i sealed the bottom with silicone and a 3$ acrylic sheet. im going to cut some ridges on the top for the overflow, and will be making a DIY media basket out of egg crate(for Filter Floss, and Chemi-pure. i already have a pump in the tube i just need a flare nozzle for my return line.. im looking to use a can of "Great Stuff" to make a Foam Rock wall to Hide the tube itself and blend it in with my rock work for a cleaner look. dgphelps
I'm going to try and build mine this weekend - I'll take pictures and provide measurements. Of course, if it fails I will share that too. I'm building for a 10 gallon standard tank. Plan is to build it so I can house some filter floss in the intake, a 50W hydro heater, and 1-2 hydro centrifugal 260 gph pumps. I may go with just one and a positionable powerhead for flow, not sure yet. Link to comment

Awesome can't wait to see what you come up with. This is the only pic i have at the moment. you cant really see the acrylic sheet at the bottom(it clear) but you can see the silicone i used. this was right before a leak test. i will finish this thing up this weekend. need to foam up some Rock work on it so it blends in with the rest of the tank. also need to finish up my Media rack:) also!!! i dont mean to thread jack. just sharing an idea, as it looks like we all have a similar one. I am curious to see what it looks like when it's finished up in the tank. about to cut the teeth into the pipe. how should i go about it? should i make teeth all the way around it? or just half? im still unsure. onefang
I think half should be sufficient for that diameter of pipe. If you have problems with the pump cavitating, you could go a little further around. Link to comment
