Fungus, odd sponge?

A little background.

I have an inTank media basket in the back of my BC29 with cheato in the bottom chamber. I have a magnafudge light on the back shinning its 4 leds into the bottom chamber of my basket.

On the glass in the tank, between the basket and the glass, and on the surface of the glass in the basket into the chaeto I have an odd growth, right over the leds.

It is almost sponge like in consistancy, i.e. kitchen type sponge. It has no smell. It grows into the chaeto but not more than a 1/4 to 1/2 an inch in.. again only right where the leds are.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this before and what could it be.

Could that be just bleached chaeto that is decomposing? I have a ten gallon that is covered in duckweed and has a glass top and the glass near the sponge filter where the bubbles comes out has a similar gunk on it. In my case it's dead/decomposing duckweed and I'm wondering if what you have is something similar.

Pretty sure no. It's on the outside where no Chaeto is as well is in the Chaeto. Only where the lights are.

It could be a sponge but sponges usually like reasonable water flow, fungi is also possible. The real issue I find is it's only around the led which would not be characteristic of either does it have anything different at the base?

It looks so much like "baked" algae

well you can see the film of red slime around it. But its just that, a thin film. There is a good 1/4" or so gap between the glass and the basket that gets filled with the stuff. The slime algae isn't even a 1/16" thick. I suppose it could just be dying then building another layer and dying, rinse, repeat until it fills that gap.

The other odd thing is the red slime is not on the inside of the basket. Its just nice clean chaeto in there, save a disk the same diameter but about twice as thick in the chaeto. Same consistency and sponginess. The stuff in the chaeto actually has strands of chaeto going through it. Those strands are bleached white but they are not decay'ed or rotten.

Yeah it probably is bleached algae crust, but second opinions would be helpful. Take some and put it in the tank itself and see of it rots.
