Help Diagnose SPS Issue

Hey all - I've got this digita (i think) that was doing great for the last couple months but all of a sudden has this weird white patch that looks completely eaten away. I'm not sure what would suddenly be chopping on it though....and nothing else. I've got a lot of other types of SPS and they all seem fine. But this area is growing and looks picked clean. Is it eaten or maybe some other issue? Here's a photo. Thanks.

Tank Info:

-29Biocube

-ALK: 9.5

-Cal: 430-450

-MG: 1200 (been working to get this higher)

-Nitrate: around 10ish (working on getting this lower)

is the tissue around the patch coming off? if so, its likely STN, which is probably due to swinging alk, temp or salinity. If it looks like something's been eating it, check for flatworms, red bugs or similar pests

Thanks - it doesn't look super fleshy around there, although some of the polyps kind of make it look like it's peeling back some. I've had the piece for a couple months and this just recently started.

I have been trying to fine tune my dosers, so there's probably been some swings in the levels but we're talking minor swings. Like 430-450 on CA and maybe 9.5-10.5 ALK - but over the course of weeks, not daily. Would that be the problem?

If it is STN - what would be a good treatment? I've seen a lot of people say super glueing the area?

super gluing has worked for me in the past, but never 100% of the time. A lot of people suggest fragging and then gluing, and other people say it fixes itself once you fix your swings

I dont think your swings would cause it, so maybe look for bugs. also, check for alk several times a day and see if it varies significantly at night vs day, or after a water change, etc

Thanks - I've got my dosers going three times a day with little bursts to try and keep it as steady as possible. I can for sure see swings right after the doser goes off (CA 430-460 for instance). I could even those out by just having the doser go 4 or 5 times a day. But are those swings big enough for problems?

When you say check for bugs - how does one do that? I go in and look with a flashlight at night and I don't see anything strange crawling around. Would I be able to see those?

Ive never really heard of small Ca swings like that causing STN, its generally been a alk issue (but remember alk and Ca are linked)

looking at night with a flashlight is generally the best option, red bugs are TINY, just fyi

is that part of the coral receiving light? i have some SPS that because of shadows/etc, portions of it have faded off to white and appear 'dead', while the rest of the coral is growing great.

I second this! This happens all the time with LED's......the top of the coral is getting all the light, while the underside of the coral is not...causing the underside of the coral to become pale/white because its not getting enough light. Maybe try and move the frag so that the underside of the coral can get more light, or frag it if the coral is shadeing itself. This happend to my birdsnest, so I hacked her up, kept a frag, and took the rest to the LFS for some store credit.

Best of luck!!

Yeah I have seen a similar issue with another sps. But this is pretty aggressive. Looks picked clean off and white. I might just try to glue it and see what happens from there.

I got a radion 30 on there but I'm starting to think that was a bad idea. I love the controllability but leds seem to have issues. I'm just learning on this tank so it's all good experience.

Thanks for all the help. I'll update with some results!
