Petco coral frags....good deal

I gotta say, I was at petco today and they are having a 30% off sale on all aquarium livestock. I was getting filter floss and noticed they had a bunch of coral frags. Two of the petcos in my area have very good saltwater sections. I saw a beautiful gold crocea clam the other day when getting dog food but the wife vetoed my purchase. Today I was alone and saw the frags for $14.99 and 30% off. I bought three including some dragon eye zoas, some goldish zoas, and a brite blue ricordea. I also got 5 chromis.

Anybody else have good frags from petco?

Also forgot to mention. The zoa frags each have around 20 polyps which is much better than what I get for $10 at most lfs.

Since I don't have much yet I'm not too worried. I've actually bought quite a few fish from a select few petcos and have not had too many problems. The cool thing about the coral frags is that all frags are the same price no matter what kind. I was talking to the manager and he said they had a large number of acro frags and a few frogspawn and torch frags that were the same price but somebody bought them.

I better get some bayer and start dipping corals though now that I think about it....I don't usually quarantine fish (but I should)

I bought a Pink Fungia plate from Petco, no problems with it whatsoever.

The Petco I go to has a really good SW selection (the guy who runs it knows his stuff) and sells chunky ORA SPS pieces for a steal (like a 4" Joe The Coral with 4-5 branches for like $35).

It said 30% all fish plants and inverts at mine. At first he said it's not coral but I said corals are inverts and he said ok.

The petco in my area has awful frags! Not to mention all of the fish look like crap too. I dont think they tried to hire anyone with saltwater experience. Maybe other petco stores are better? I personally would pass on the sale.

I have seen huge disparities between petcos. The one about 10 miles from me is the sorriest looking store I think I've seen. But the one in my town is pretty nice and better than many lfs. The one about 20 miles away is super nice with healthy coral and fish. If they can keep sps alive long enough that it encrusts into their frag rack they have me sold. There were a few montis and chalices that were completely encrusted onto the frag rack. And I'm not talking like they just touched it. A couple had like 2" of growth into the frag rack. That one is a little pricey for corals but their clams and fish are cheap. The one I frequent has cheap coral

I generally think petco to be pretty lame, but it is very dependent on the individuals in charge of ordering and maintenance from location to location. They do have the ability to order just about anything and everything if you ask them and they have half a brain. I know personally my petco in town can order any ORA coral you want, or just about any manner of acro of exotic fish you can imagine. Price point is terrible usually though. One thing that is hard to get around is that the upper management seems to have strict guidelines on what kind of lighting that is allowed to be used over their display tanks, and it's usually inadequate for optimal coral coloration. Being said...

I did pick up my ORA blue maxima clam from petco for only $40 which aint terrible. Their trash corals and LPS pricing tends to be outrageous though. They had a 1" palau nepthelia frag for $75 at one point. Usually pulsing xenia and GSP cannot be purchased for any less than $50 a frag there. long dead and algae covered Lobo skeletons still labeled and attempted to pass as actual healthy corals going for $75-100 a pop. Just silliness. I do get my fish food there if I need some in a pinch

I've also aquired a royal gramma, tomini tang, leopard wrasse, and target mandarin all from petco. All still alive and healthy years later, never any ich

I went back yesterday and they had more frags so I got one more zoa frag with three different zoa types for $14.99. Has about 40 polyps. However I noticed they had blue mushrooms for $50 and gsp for $30 which is crazy.

I have a Petco I will go to for saltwater items. They can have some great looking corals, but lately they have been dead/dying. Most likely due to the fact they completely remodeled the aquatic section and didn't allow the water to cycle completely. Once things smooth out though, they should be good. They get some decent SPS and LPS, and sometimes good zoas.

The local petco also just hired someone that actually knows what he's doing and he has done a good job on ordering fish etc for the store. All look healthy and well fed when I went yesterday

I would consider about 10% of the fish at my local petco as purchase worthy. I actually did too - QT'd it.

Mine doesn't sell coral, but they do sell live rock that look like hairy potatos.

It did work haha. I've got 4 frags so far that all look great. And I have bought plenty of fish and never qt them. Some did ok some didn't. I now am setting up a qt tank though since they most definitely have ich
