Substitute for Minijet 606 in Fluval Spec V?

Couldn't get one in time. Should I just put in a bulky Koralia 240 powerhead or is there a substitute?

Thanks,

What about a sicce syncra.5 or 1.0?

This is what I have. I'm at work but ill post pictures when I get home.

This what i've done and it's a real PITA but it works.

  • There is a nipple on that you have to cut off the powerhead so the nozzle will spin 360 degrees.
  • Remove your filter / media basket ( I have the inTank media basket but it shouldn't be a problem if you have the one that comes with it)
  • Turn the nozzle so its pointed on top of where nipple was.
  • Put it in the filter area at then slide it over to the pump area
  • Here is the PITA part. You have to use something to rotate the nozzle up ( I have these and they worked)
  • So the power head nozzle is 5/8 in size there are a couple of different ways you can go after this.
  • First I used one of these with the original deflector at the top. The original deflector is very restricting. I removed the reflector but left the elbow and it was much better than stock but still not what I wanted.
  • Then I ordered one of these. But i wanted it clean up against the wall and not connected to a tube like this.
  • So i got 5/8 tubing and these from homedepot. (They say 1/2 but they fit 1/2 and 5/8)
  • I used a knife and wallard out the hole on the wall so one of the connectors from the water deflector could fit through it.
  • Then connect the elbow to the pipe
  • Then connect the pipe to the pump.
  • Then connect the elbow to the water deflector fitting
  • Then connect the water deflector to the water deflector fitting

And after all that i think i'm gonna order a larger pump.

Haven't tried it, but according to the specs on amazon, its WAY too big. needs to be 2" x 2.25" max after mods (if any). Amazon lists that one as 5" x 3" x 6"

That first link isn't working for me. Do you have a brand/model you can provide? Also, which Fluval Spec are you using? I know they each have slightly different chamber sizes.

That sucks heard they are great pumps, I'm gonna get the 1.5

I guess amazon has the wrong sizes

Like i said it's not a direct drop in. You have to go under the media basket area to get it to fit.

I have the spec V btw.

Under the media basket area huh? I didn't even think of doing that. Makes complete sense if it's short enough. Pump sits under basket and the tube travels into the normal section and out into the main tank. Genius. I will be checking this out for sure

Also, why are you going to get a larger pump now? And what pump are you thinking of upgrading to?

I feel like it's not enough with the flow deflector on it. I'm not sure what i'm going to go with. The 180 is a lot better than stock but still leaves me wanting more.

That worked like a charm! I even tweaked it a little. I left the nipple on it and rotated it before putting it in the chamber. Whats more, I even put it in the pump chamber, not the media basket chamber.

I put the wire in first (not the prong end, but the middle of the wire, such that I could push a loop down into the pump area). Once I pushed the loop into the pump area, I put my hand in the media basket, grabbed the wire and pulled lightly while pushing down on the pump to get the pump to the bottom. I used the prongs to lightly rotate the pump so it would fall flat on the bottom and sneak in under the divide. Once there, I pulled the excess wire out of the pump section so the entire pump, wire and all, were in the pump section.

Then i took the ORIGINAL tubing, and put it into the pump output (it fits snug, but not snug enough that its difficult to insert from a long distance. Finally, I added a piece of vinyl tubing to the elbow after it was inserted into the wall to ensure the output would remain in the tank, as I found the fluval reflector to be very limiting as well.

Sorry to bump an almost year old thread, but has anybody tried this pump as an alternative to the Marineland 606?

45Zmmrel.jpg

It's called the MN 606 by an Italian company called NEWA.

It looks really similar but I'm having trouble finding the exact dimensions. I've contacted them but had no reply as yet.

If I knew how to order one I would try it out and let everyone know. I have a pico mag 180 thats crammed in there but the flow still sucks...i need to either get more flow from the return pump or figure out a way to block the edges of my surface skimmer that i got with the intank basket kit. i barely have a strong enough return to get water over the bulkhead and thru the basket. sucks and im frustrated.

i removed the surface skimmer. it raises the water level too high and i get crazy salt creep. now i just run without one. as for a stronger pump, send StevieT a PM. I thought he is now carrying a small pump that can fit into the Spec V with some mods.

It's the same pump as the Mini Jet 606, made by the same company that actually made the 606.

Problem is they only make it in 220volts. We have been trying to get them in 110 volts but others keep dropping the ball.

The Aqueon 600 is very similar and fits in the spec. We have it on our site

Do you think I'm better off with the aqueon 600 or the hydor pico 180 in the Spec V? I have the pico in there currently but no idea if the aqueon would give better flow.

Link to comment

I just installed the aqueon and it's got some serious flow to it over the stock pump. It's rated for 160gph or something around there. Nice little pump!!

The minijet is going to be re-released in the US but not until later this year, maybe September or October (got that straight from the horses mouth).

Thanks, afraid I'm in the UK or I would have ordered one of those from you.

In case it helps anyone else, I got the NEWA 606 and it fits in the filter compartment of the Spec V no trouble. Just have to unclip the front and rear covers.

Only problem is that it's pretty noisy (hoping it will settle down) and due to its height (twice that of the stock pump), reduces the available room for the heater.

Oh and it drops the water level in the filter compartments a fair bit too which again is also not ideal for the heater situation, guess any moderately powerful pump would do the same though.

So have we settled on which pump is the best because I am getting seriously annoyed with the stock pump.... HELP haha

Confirming the Aqueon 600 is a solid option. Ordered mine from Stevie above. 30 second modification and it's a perfect fit. It's got some good horsepower as well.

Where do you run your heater then? (As I presume having it in the pump section will be useless with the pump in the other section).

Well, for the time being it is in my display tank. Since getting the surface skimmer (also from InTank), my display tank water level stays up and I only see the loss from evap in the rear chambers. Because of this I have to move the heater. If you run a cobalt neo therm heater it'll fit in the rear chamber with the pump. I did some testing on mine and I lose a bit more than an inch of water due to evap each 24 hours. With the cobalt heater that would put the water level below the minimum.

Best option according to my research:

Cobalt neo therm heater with smart micro ATO

The above combo will allow you to run the ato sensor in the pump chamber AND the heater in the pump chamber.

I do not have the cobalt or smart micro ATO yet so my heater remains in my display tank. They are both on my shopping list to grab as funds allow. But, with the testing and research I've done the above combo will work like a champ on the spec V!!
