Petco won't sell me starfish

So, I rolled into a local Petco tonight to check them out. They actually have some nice salt tanks. So the little girl there asks me if I need anything and I ask her if she could get chocolate chip stars in on a regular basis as I was thinking of getting a pair of harlequin shrimp. I was told they can't sell them to me since they will be used as feeders. She said it would be too cruel. I asked about the freezer full of mice and rats and the hundreds of feeder goldfish they have. She said sorry and directed me to a couple reef shops hours away. I tried to inform her that starfish are incapable of feeling pain, have no brains, and are a low order animal--she didn't believe me.

talk to the manager, or even still go to the district manager,

Hahaha that's hilarious... I think if you play your cards right and get a big enough star you can "harvest" legs from them for some time.

Going to a manager or a dm won't help. It's company policy and they have to obay it. Anything not listed as a feeder can't be sold as one

well no one told the manager or DM of the store i was in, i was told i wasnt able to deny the sale of an animal used as a feeder, most rodents, cheap fish, shrimp and starfish

That's easy enough to solve. Lie. Just walk in and buy them, I gurantee they get at least 4 a week. If they ask, you are constructing a large fowlr and slowly adding a cuc. Even if they know what they're talking about, that's air right. I would recommend maintaining a population in the sump and rotating them for limb removal to save cash though.

I don't know I still think they possibly can feel pain, but unlike us they can regrow entire legs back, you should buy quite a few of them maybe 10 and one take one leg from one starfish at any one time so it can regenerate quicker keeping you a continued supply of food ;) also maybe come in wearing a wig and putting/ taking off glasses that should make you less recognizable, also a bandana or medical mask never hurt.

For once (reported on a forum) a petco is being responsible and they are still the bad guy.

Cry more.

no, just no. He has the choice to keep the shrimp, and it would be wrong not to feed them their proper feed since they are specialized to only eat starfish.

Great. Then he can more effectively source the food and not bring a private business in to his choice.

This isn't the ocean. It's all fake and everything will die for our pleasure.

technically any living thing with a nervious system can feel stimulation that we have given the name and association pain. but that being said their system is still primitive, there is room for lots of debate here.

everything you have ever eaten died for your life. not to mention that even though our tanks are "fake" they still need their natural food to live, go take your trolling some where else. its a starfish, it has a sensory and nervious system thats extremely primitive, so the tears you shed are croc tears.

So they didn't sell you a fish and you get all butt hurt. Either not open your mouth next time or learn to fish shop.

Seems as you are such a responsible habitat keeper you would have secured a long term food source first.

But you didn't. And now you're mad at yourself while passing blame on a private business's employee for being responsible.

if you actually read the original post you would see that the OP was THINKING about keeping harlequin shrimp, didnt have the shrimp. so they are trying to make sure that the shrimp have a food source, but hey what do i know. i just read the post

Funny you believe that. So it's butt hurt over my future shrimp that doesnt exist yet must make thread about petco non existance problem.

Sounds like this "little girl" actually knew her shit and the OP was left out a star.

wow ok, well let me poke more holes in this, refusing to sell a starfish for food is ridiculous, the shrimp i give my dwarf lion fish, leaf scorp, and hawk fish have more brains, yet petco will sell them all day long as feeders. not only that but rodents, who i might add show more intelligence than some people. so care to explain how selling something for feeding thats literally brainless is cruel, and the girl "knows her stuff"?

Yeah, she was "pretty sure they are smart" when referring to the starfish. Uh, huh. Practical marine biologist she was.

Sounds like you live in an imaginary world with all the things you are making up about my post. I at least hope your imaginary world is a nice one. After all, if you are the one inventing it, at least invent something nice for yourself.

Moral issues aside I would QT anything purchased from them... Granted each store is different but I'm regularly lured in my great prices and decent "looking" livestock only to wish I hadn't for various reasons...

So if there isn't another store in the area willing to sell you sacrificial starfish just don't be chatty and buy the starfish.

Good luck on the shrimp if you decide to get them. I think they are pretty awesome, I'm just not up for the additional care requirements yet. Although I do have to wonder if anyone has gotten them to eat frozen..

Sounds like you started this whiny thread to gain some "support" for your case. You didn't receive it and now you are even more butt hurt.

I don't see you or anyone else upset about feeding ghost shrimp to our fish so what's the difference if someone wants to feed shrimp their natural food source.

no idea where you get these crazy ideas, the OP got support, just not from you, not that your support matters

You're reading comprehension is lacking. I could care less about a starfish being used as food.
