Any recommendations on a good HOB Skimmer for a 30g.

Aqua C Nano Remora or CPR Bak Pak or Reef Octopus Classic 100?

Thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

I know it's a week ago,but I think the best hob is aquamaxx.i do think reef octopus is good and eshopps.Aqua c nano are noisy and cpr back pak not so good. Also look into sea side hob, don't know too much about them, but seaside does make a good skimmer.Good Luck

The sea side aquatics as1 is nice, but you will find that it is hard to find someone who sells it. I would suggest either the deep water aquatics hob-1 or Aquamaxx HOB-1. They are basically the same skimmer, the deep water one is just rebranded for salty supply. Aquamaxx also makes some even nicer ones, but you will really pay for them, and they are rated for a bigger tanks. Even with a heavy bioload, the HOB-1 should be able to handle a 30 gallon tank.

The Aqua c nano is noisy at first but it you put wet paper towel in the first chamber it's dead quiet lol I have mine and it pulls the best skimmate I've seen thus far, so you can quiet it down

Reef Octopus all the way. Is your tank an aio?? If so make sure whatever you go with will fit in the back chambers...I had the classic 100 and it was more of a hang on side skimmer lol...very ugly. I picked up the classic 90 with external pump and it fit perfectly in the chambers! But Reef Octopus makes some badass skimmers.

I've always heard good things of the reef octopus line, but man I think all HoB are ugly lol my next tank is gonna be an AIO

I researched a couple weeks ago for hob skimmers. My choice came down to aquamaxx hob-1 or the reef octopus, I went with the aquamaxx and couldn't be happier. Within 2 hours I had green tea like skimate and now 3 days later it's some nasty dark brown crude

I don't want to thread hijak but have been pondering the same question. My current skimmer isn't working well and I want to upgrade to a new hob skimmer.

Anyone have thoughts on the RO BH100 vs BH1000 ?

Aside from in tank vs out of tank pump it looks like the main difference is that the BH1000 has a bubble plate.

Also considering eshopps 75H - apparently the sicce pumps are the new popular thing.

I really just want a skimmer that I can set to run without constantly fiddling with. My Tunze 9002 I have had for 4-5 years now never consistently pulled more than a light tea color for longer than a week before needing to be tweaked/disassembled/etc.

Bh1000 because bubble plate, eshopps is not bad at all.but aquamaxx still is the best out there, with reef octopus right at 2nd.

I have a truvu AIO, plenty of rear chamber space, already have a mag 7 sitting in there =P

Question on the aquamaxx would be what functionally makes it worth the price jump over the reef octopus?

Looking at a $130 for eshopps 75h, $150 for bh100, $190 for BH 1000 and then $230 for aquamaxx. That puts the aquamaxx at almost 2x the price of the eshopps, is the functionality really better? I understand build quality comes into play and eshopps has a questionable history, it is also a big tower of a skimmer. What makes the aquamaxx that much better than reef octopus though? It looks like it has a fancier bubble plate?

I am using a Tunze 9002 now which has -never- worked consistently for me. With my understanding of skimmers now, I am fairly disappointed in that purchase given the post-pump venturi, etc. A friend told me you want an in-tank skimmer and that the tunze was the best.

Well now I understand the value of meshwheel/needlewheel impellers, pre-pump venturi, bubble plates, surface skimming, etc. Heck, I have basically rebuilt my entire current skimmer at this point.

It seems like the problem with skimmers is that the opinions are very subjective. People typically have not owned both to really compare, they say, "I have x and x works so x is great" but cannot say why it is better than the alternative. I wish there was clear benchmarks for this like there was for purchasing computer upgrades =/

I so happen to have an aquamaxx for sale :)

Well shit, too bad it was sold already!

If the deal falls through I am all over that =)

Just bought it, don't tell my wife.

=)

That is a great skimmer, you wont be disappointed. The JNS VS-1 is actually the original. The Aquamaxx HOB-1 is the rebrand.

I cannot speak for the Eshopps 75h but the nano skimmer what I have on my 15 gallon does absolute work I love that skimmer and the sicce pump is super quiet!

Yup, excited for it to get here.

Have had my tank running for some 4-5 years now, really cannot believe it has been that long.

My old skimmer quit functioning, got busy with life and tank had fallen into semi neglect. Luckily it has everything fairly automated, but just had the tank crash and my SPS all get RTN and die within a week.

Woke me up and got me re-focused on getting things straightened out. First order of business was getting a good working skimmer so I can get the nutrients in the tank down. Next order of business is to go find some new Sps to grow out again =)

Now I just need the stupid yasha goby I bought to quit hiding. At least I am hoping it is hidden and didn't go carpet surfing and get eaten by my dogs.

Thanks for the feedback in this thread. Hoping this new skimmer will be a long functioning purchase.

Well, I appreciate the response(and the high jack lol), makes good reading. For the record (since I started this thread), I have a AIO 45g rimless. I went with the CPR Bak pak, it works pretty good. Better than some cheaper models I have used. I might upgrade to a Aquamaxx sometime down the road. It hangs on tank, but doesn't look to bad.

I'm totally hijacking, but I'm looking for a HOB - and actually a hang on side that sits outside the back chambers. I think I'll look into this one! Unless you still have it and want to sell it to me :D

I've been using my ESHOPPS-100 HOB for a bit now and it is a work horse for my 40 breeder and the thing is very quiet and super easy to clean. Once I get my sump up and running I'll be going with their in sup skimmer with the cone design.
