Im new to this forum but have had a 55 gal for about 2 years now. I just went out and got a 100g for free out of my grandmas garage, i filled it up to check for leaks and there was no leaking but on the front pane of glass one corner started to separate. My question is do i do a full rebuild or can i just take that pane off and reattach and seal it back up? or would it be too much of a hassle to do so and i should just trash the project and go get a new tank? Id rather not get a new tank since i received this for free

Just taking the rim off will be a good deal of work. It's possible to take off and reseal the panel, but it's not a simple DIY job. I'm not sure a 100 gallon tank would be my first venture into doing something like this.

A long time ago, I did the following on a 10 gallon tank (less pressure and potential damage than a 100 gallon, and I'm not necessarily recommending that you do this). It's the silicone that actually holds the panel in place; so I carefully trimmed the damaged silicone off of the inside panel (making sure not to cut into the silicone between the panes by cutting perpendicular to the joint). Then I put a new bead of silicone on the inside edge. However, this doesn't increase the strength of the original silicone.

Silicone degrades over time. So if tank is very old, I might question its strength. Also, if this was a freshwater tank in which copper meds were used, it might not be an ideal reef tank.

Imagine this big boy leaking after it is fully setup. Personally, I'd consider buying a new tank. However, I'd be interested to hear other people's thoughts on this.

Thanks for the input! Yea it is pretty old 25 years or more.. with that being said i would think the only logical decision if i wanted to save this tank would be, if i were to do it would be to rebuild the whole tank.(which i really don't think i plan on doing) I wouldn't want to come home from work and find my living room soaked with 100g of water if i didn't seal the panes good enough. I think im just going to buy a new tank wether its brand new or a tank from craigslist.
