Stocking Suggestions

So, been a while since I've posted here. Long story short, I have a new tank setup and currently looking into what to stock it with. It's a 30 gallon display with a 20 gallon sump/refugium and being run by my custom controller. Still developing my reef controller and so far my main controller and lighting controller are working very well.

Anyway, I want to stock this tank. Right now it only has a clown and a lawnmower blenny.

I wonder if anyone has had any success with any combination of these fish:

Koran Tang
Yellow Eyed Tang
Flame Angel
Keyhole Angel
Coral Beauty Angel
Koran Angel
Valentini Puffer

I also want to add a second clown and a bubble anemone. Obviously I'm not going to cram all those into the tank, but curious if anyone has had any experience they could throw my way before I start hosting fish fighting matches late at night for money.

I would not put a tang of any size in a 30 gallon tank unless it was small and you had a big tank to move it to. That being said I also wouldn't put more than one dwarf angel in a tank that size. The puffer would be fine I think, however it will be eating your inverts a lot to keep its teeth filed down. Sorry to crush your dreams, I don't want to be a downer.

Darn... Yea, the wife really wanted a puffer... Feedback and some research ruled that out sadly. I think I'm leaning toward a Flame or Coral Beauty. Do Angels get territorial? As cool as they are, I don't want to end up only having one fish in the tank either.

Hmm...

A Dwarf
x2 Ocellaris
Lawnmower Blenny

Tentative:
6-line wrasse
mandarin goby (dragonette)

neon dottyback

royal dottyback

dragonette's need lots of pods, and should be in a very well established tank, even with the 20g sump its still very small. 6 line can get pushy as they get older also

I had a dragonette for a while that I absolutely loved. Fed it pods and it actually started eating the food for the rest of fish over the pods. Lights turned on one morning, freaked him out and he jumped. Swore I'd always use dimmers since... He will be sorely missed. :(

they are amazing fish, i mean there is people that have kept them in smaller tanks as long as you supply pods. even broken in on pellets or ect they still need pods. i'm sure if you can keep on it down the road you can try one. but may i suggest a fish to look into? a yellow coris wrasse.

Oooh, I haven't seen that one before. My wife would love that

they are affordable and have amaizing color, also great for pest control. prob one of the best fish i have owned. great for your size tank too.

If you're set on an angel go with a pygmy (cherub) angel. Stays the smallest and probably the most reef safe. Mines been a model tank mate, it's been a great addition to my reef.

I don't necessarily want an angel, but I would like a bigger fish to more or less fill in the open water instead of just zooming in and out of the rock.

Love the suggestions though, keep them coming! I won't be stocking till I get back home in a couple months.

just rememeber to not overstock. look into possum wrasse and firefish also. the black cap basslet is nice looking too.

Na, I'm building a wish list and will narrow it down later.

I have a starcki damselfish that has always been peaceful and it pretty much just swims in open water. Dwarf angels are in and out of rocks a lot, the gramma I,had was in the open constantly.

have you ever looked into different types of clownfish?

I have... I like the snowflakes, but they get expensive quick. I like the maroon clowns while they're young, but heard they get aggressive quick. Saddles don't really grab my appeal. Idealy I want to get a black Ocellaris to go with my orange one.

I had a damsel in my smaller tank when I first started out. Not a starki though, mine was white with a yellow top and blue fin... Can't remember what it was called. It got mean though, picked on my clown so I had to turn it back in. I do love the Grammas, do they get aggressive? I know the Royal dottybacks look similar and can get territorial... Would be nice to have an equivalent that doesn't pick fights.

I may stick with an orange and black ocellaris unless there's some other benefit. I like the midnight, but not so much the platinum... Maybe if I find a nice at my lfs

  • 2 weeks later...

If you are looking at dottybacks, consider an orchid dottyback. I have one. She gets along well with my other fish and is always swimming out in the open
