I switched to red sea salt not liking the result.

Ive done two water changes with red sea and I use distilled water corals have not responded well and will not fully extend.

I used reef crystals for years never had corals act like this all LPS in my tank.

Would using distilled water with red sea have anything to do with change in corals?

i switched from reef crystals to red sea without any issues. like previous post said, was all parameters matched? i do find when switching salts i like to do smaller water changes more frequently than normal. i have a six gallon i normally change two-three gallons in, when changing i only changed 1 gallon at a time. give it time.

I switched from Kent to Red Sea a while back, and I recall seeing some strange behavior in my corals - but they eventually went back to normal. My theory is that by switching salts, there was also a pretty significant change in the balances of alk, cal, mag, etc, so the corals are probably going to feel it and show it.

How much water are you changing, and in what size of tank?

RSCP is high Alk & can swing it a couple points on a water change, that will piss a lot of coral off with a sudden change like that if you were medium to low on Alk b4.

i also use distilled water, forgot about the alk difference between the two salts. that is most likely the culprit and things should adjust.

I think you may have switched salts too drastically... usually the best result to changing from salts to other salts, is mixing 75-25% then 50-50% and finally 25-75% until you are completely 100% with the new salt. give them time, hopefully the change doesn't affect them too negatively.

I dont like hot salts like Red Sea and a few others like it. The blue bucket seems to be OK but the Pro version has ridiculously high levels. I know lots of folks are happy and successful with it...but...I still dont understand the purpose. I think the crazy high levels in some salt mixes is more a marketing ploy than good husbandry.

Anizato has some good advice if you plan to stick with RS.

Switching salts period can cause a tank to be unhappy.... Try phasing your current salt out (if you still have any). For instance the first water change would be 75% old salt brand 25% new (repeat twice), 50/50 repeat twice, 25/75 repeat twice.... and you will have better results. Most recommend chaining things over even slower and actually increasing the same amount each time. Honestly I feel any change over is better than no change over. Your corals are simply trying to stay at homeostasis... They would rather stay on a terrible salt (not that you were using a terrible salt) than see a fast change in their environment. It is like chaining your diet... When you suddenly switch over to health foods your body does take about 2-3 weeks to catch up and most people's immune system tanks within that period. Doesn't mean they shouldn't do it... Change is just hard on organisms.

you also have to mix red sea a little different than other brands. mix for about 15-30 mins then do your water change right away. if you let it sit too long it will precipitate and you'll lose your elements. i switched back to instant ocean because I sometimes mix and don't feel like doing the change right away.

I've used RSCP for over a year and sometimes don't use the mixed water for a day or 2 or 3..Never had any problems.
