40 % water change weekly 12gallon

Looking at changing about 20% water every 4 days. I'm wondering if this is to much or not.

I have a 12 gallon aio, no skimmer, media basket with poly, phosguard and carbon. I like to feed my fish everyday. Two clowns, and goby/pistol pair.

Sounds a lot like my tank. I have an IM 16 gal Nuvo AIO. I started with dry rock and live sand. I don't have a skimmer, and if you're good about your care...IMHO you don't need one. I have a Kessil 360 WE with it's controller, an MP 10 and I used the InTank media baskets for the back and to hold my media. I use Phosguard, Chemipure Elite, and carbon. After everything is said and done, I think I have about 12-13 gal of water in my tank. I do a 3 gal water change once a week. Oops, I also use filter floss and that is changed every 3-4 days. I also have 2 clowns, a goby and a pistol. I do also have a good size clean up crew.

My tank is a mixed reef and it is doing great. Everything looks amazing. I'm sure you can get away with once a week. I know guys that do water changes once a month, but they do have skimmers. I would never stretch it that long. Consistency is the name of the game.

I also have a Nuvo 16 . I am not running a skimmer but I do run carbon and GFO in a reactor. I used to run carbon(Rox - highly efficient) continiously but now I back down to two weeks out of the month at most. I run GFO for a week or two a month depending on algae growth. I feed the tank heavily twice everyday. I was performing 4-5 gal. w/c's every Sunday but I didn't like how my sps coral reacts to shutting the tank down and changing a large percentage. It would take a day for them to get back to normal. My tank is at one year now- for the last 4 months I've gone to 1 gal. w/c's a day- usually 5-7 times a week. My filter section allows for me to remove 1/2 gal. of water before it starts sucking air in the pump so I do it in two stages- change 1/2 gal. Wait about 20 min. for it to circulate and change the other 1/2 gal. My corals don't ever react to the change and remain open and happy the whole time. It only takes a few minutes to change out the water and replace. Just something to think about- smaller more frequent changes keeps parameters more even and level. I also have a mixing station that holds 14gal. of saltwater and I keep it as close as possible to the tank water- Alk,ca., mag. salinity and temp.

20% every 4 days might be more than necessary...I'm another Nuvo 16 guy, with probably 13-14 gallons in the display. One clown, one wrasse, two hermits and two turbo snails, with a bunch of softies and LPS corals. I change about 2-2.5 gallons every two weeks, and everything in the tank is absolutely loving life. Corals come out in full, very bushy, fish are active, minimal algae growth...I'm happy with the system right now for sure!

So, you could probably get away with 20% every week, or two weeks even, in my opinion.
