Changed pump in Biocube, couple questions..

So I was at the LFS getting the water tested to see where I am in the cycle. I knew they sold Cobalt equipment, at least heaters. And they also had the pump I wanted, the MJ1200.

I got home and had to put it in right away. I took the stock pump out (I imagine it no longer was quite 243 GPH anymore being one of prob the first models, but who knows) and the tube I was using. I set the tube aside. It took me a little longer to figure out some logistics of things. The tube had a white film within it. When I connected everything back up, and turned on the pump, a bunch of white flakes came out. Should I be worried?

Speaking of tubes, I am just running some hose that I got from a hardware store. I have seen people talking about using a specific brand, eHeim I think. Is there any problem with just using any tubing you can get from a hardware store?

Putting in the MJ1200 didn't seem to lower the temps any, but at least if I am going to have the same temp, I have 50 more GPH. However, I was thinking, could I be hendering the flow in any way? Like would the Hydor Rotating Deflector decrease flow in any way?

It should be fine, but I'd probably still siphon out any flakes that I could.

If it's rated for potable water, it won't be a problem.

A deflector will reduce the output.

When I had a biocube 29 I used one of the im spin stream things and it worked well with a cobalt mj1200 between that and a mildly set mp10 I had great flow top and bottom

Thanks for the responses. What is that I need to check on the tube?

I can tell the output should be a bit higher, the sand dips where you can see where the water hits the most increased even more. I can't decide to move anything around or just leave it be.

With matured tanks (1 yr maybe I guess) you can get alot of "stuff" built up in there near the pump .. and I've never really gone in behind and "siphoned" any of that stuff out. BUT, I notice when you turn off the pumps and leave it for a bit, some of it may settle back right near the intake. So, when you turn it back on - some of that shoots out and into the tank.

I don't think it's horrible, but it can make the water look dirty. I usually hold my filter floss in front of my nozzle when I do WC's and when I turn the pump back on to "catch" that stuff.
