Are there any reputable LFS in the Boston area?

So I've just got into buying corals for my 26 gallon and it appears there are limited options for local stores in and around Boston carrying corals. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Tropic Isle in Framingham, not sure what they have right now. Been meaning to make a trip out there, haven't been since I was a kid. I know there are a couple more out there though

Tropical isle is ok but their customer service is terrible. Half of the time they make you feel like you are knocking on their door at home unannounced asking for coral/fish from their personal tanks for free. Check out boston reefers. Tons of people in the Boston area selling corals at reasonable prices.

+1 for Boston Reefers.

Never personally got anything from anyone on there but I always see reallllllly nice stuff.

Have you ever been to Krystal Clear in Auburn. That's my closest LFS, love their set up and they are always friendly and really helpful.

All my coral is from Boston reefers! There is a guy who goes by Dz6t (his name is Dong) that has the most amazing set up in his basement. 1000+ frags most available for under 30 dollars. He is now a sponsor on the forums and is the most awesome coral seller the world could ever wish for. Of all the coral I buy from boston reefers I would say 70 percent of them are from him.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I've only checked out Lovely pets in Quincy- and prices seem pretty high and a ton of their corals were damaged or did not look healthy. The owner is really knowledgeable and helpful though so it was a good place to start with. There was a place in the South End right near my work but it relocated about 50 min outside the city now.

As for Dz6t- i just found him on Boston Reefers (joined yesterday)! I shot him an email and gave him a list of some species i would be interested in and he basically said he had nearly all of them available. It sounds best to go to a guy that specializes in corals instead of freshwater, saltwater fish, and "some" corals. I'm going tomorrow!

Yep Dong is the best guy ever. He can name all his corals down to the species for the most part. Super knowledgeable. If there is a coral you want and he doesn't have it I would double check to make sure it actually exists!

Have fun and leave some coral for the rest of us! Once my new tank settles down I will making a trip up to his house.

I'm sure he was a vendor at the frag market from March. I got a lot of corals that day. I'll have to shoot him a message if I find myself itching for something new

Ha, I will let you know what I pick up from him!

What are your waiting for to settle down with your tank? new one or some other changes?

Ya, waiting for everything to be kosher is the worst, I unfortunately am not a patient person with most things but here- you got to be.

+1 for Dong and Boston Reefers. I bought some frags from him recently and they are all doing great! He has an amazing selection at some really great prices. He's also a really nice guy, great to talk to.

I also like Oceans in Glass in Salem, NH if you don't mind a bit of a drive outside of the city.

Ah, what size selection do they have? Cheaper frags in addition to large ones? I'm always nervous about grabbing a large piece of a species I have no experience with. Having one not do well at $20 is drastically different than $60. As for Oceans in Glass, I have no problem making an hour road trip to see some new stuff. Looking forward to here more.

I lived in Boston last year (without a car) and the only place I found that was accessible by the T was Lovely Pets in Quincy. I thought they had a decent selection of both fresh and saltwater.

Yep new tank. I transfered all of my current coral over and they must have really liked the new tank because they all started to suck down the alk! I went from a dkh of 11 (reef crystals) to a dkh of 5.5 :( in 2 weeks with twice weekly 10 percent water changes of reef crystals.

Unfortunately, I ran out of both of my Alk test kits just as I was switching tanks so it got low without me even realizing it! I am back up to about 6.5 after 2 days of dosing 15 ml of Seachem reef fusion. Seems like my tank is sucking about .5 dkh a day. Not too serious but I really dont have much coral in there right now.

Dong from Boston Reefers has mostly smaller frags (he has 3 huge frag tanks with hundreds of frags, mostly sps) that are an inch or two and some larger ones. Oceans in Glass has a good selection of different size frags/colonies and usually a nice selection of fish too.

Ya so I picked up a few small sps frags that were not really on my radar, but for $5 a piece I figured it was worth seeing how the did. Green slimer, red monti and I am not positive the last one, maybe a birdsnest.

-I agree, he mostly stocks SPS and has a ton of them! I had a hard time though finding reasonably priced LPS/softies. He had a lot of beautiful colored zoos but even frags with a few polyps were pricey. As for Oceans in Glass, I appreciate having the opportunity to buy well established or small frags.

Dong is the absolute man. I also use Tropic Isle and the other comments are spot on. Nice selection but the service is not great. There are a few friendly employees so get in good with them. Prices are OK, a little high.

I've heard Jay's Aquatics in NH is great but I have not been myself.

Just go talk to Dong. Dong's basement is going to blow your mind.

I shop at Jay's frequently as well. They have a decent coral selection but prices can be high. I usually go there more for their fish and supplies.

Was just at dongs today. Got the hook up on some awesome sps frags. His place is even crazier than the last time I went.

I agree, dong has a lot of nice stuff.. Also frank from brs in Groton has a lot of inexpensive frags. "Love the reef" in Wilmington is an amazing store if you haven't checked them out

Im in Danville pretty close to the Mass border, I just listed a few frags - some red and blue zoas, red montipora, and a neon green toadstool - on New Hampshire Reef Club Facebook page if anyone is interested.

Ah, I have not ever been to Love the Reef- thanks for the heads up. Wilmington is a lot closer to Boston than most other options i've come across. What type of selection do they normally have? Established corals, frags, etc.?
