dasstheboss
How many of you keep a cat with reef aquariums? I'm planning to get both when I move out and would like any specific pointers about having both together. So far, I have: 1. Get a glass cover. 2. Avoid stray wires (was going to do for aesthetics regardless) 3. Set up a stool near the tank for the cat to watch the fish. 4. Avoid venomous fish just in case. Any others? P.S. Never had a cat but have kept reef aquariums since childhood. Link to comment
rafastank727
Just last night a cat got into our house and ate 7 of my fish. Sad sad day for me Link to comment
lkoechle
My cat ignores them. He would sit next the tanks, occasionally watch, but that's it. never needed a cover except to keep the fish themselves from escaping. Link to comment
VW_TDI_02
Don't get a cat, problem solved. haha Link to comment
mattyfelts
my cat has no clue what a fish is, just make sure it cant get in and ur safe. Link to comment
lkoechle
The cat might run off with carpet surfing fish though. I had a kuhli loach go missing and had no idea where it went then I found it up stairs... Pretty sure he didnt make it all that way on his own. Link to comment
tdannhauser30
my cat doesnt bother the tank at all, no interest in it.. Granted my cat is almost 21 years old and doesnt do much of anything anymore lol Link to comment
SchnauzerFace
My cat is always causing trouble with my aquarium. When I ask her to feed the tank, she never rinses the frozen mysis in RO water. She turns the tumble way up on my GFO. And I'm pretty sure she has my EcoSmartLive password because someone keeps turning the violet and green to 100% and everything else down to 0. Other than that, my cat doesn't bother anything. Link to comment
shawnd08
Both of my cats like to sit and watch the tanks but other than that they don't bother them. I have a cat that is at my parents house ( could only take 2 to my apartment) when I had tanks set up there. If i did not pay attention to him he would jump up and sit on the tanks. they had glass canopy's and when no one was around I believe he was sticking his paw in the space between the canopy and tank, swatting at the fish. I only assume this because there would be water all over the top of the canopy and side of the tank. He has also jumped into the tank while I was doing a water change... he quickly jumped right back out. If you do get a cat and you notice it keeps jumping up on the tank you could try using a spray bottle and spray it with water each time you catch it up there. Link to comment
Fishstiks
Skip the glass lid and go with a mesh screen top instead. Keep cords out of the cat's reach Sometimes it's better to NOT keep a stool for cat to watch the tank, as the higher area may make it easier for them to jump on (or possibly in) the tank. Especially if you get a young cat with lots of energy and curiosity. Other than that, enjoy! I have a cat and a reef tank, and have never had an issue.....although she does like to help me acclimate new fishies. :-) Link to comment
ReefWeeds
We have two cats, one of which is completely obsessed with the tank! We knew he would be so a tank with a strong cover was a must for us. We do have a table next to the tank for him to watch and he also loves to sit/lay on top which I'm sure is a "no no" but there's really no stopping him. So far, no problems! Link to comment
reef.led
If you have a power bar that is within their reach make sure to hide it. One of our cats has turned the main power off for a few hours. Link to comment
C00kieduster
If you just get a dog, you'll save yourself so much trouble! Link to comment
OpFor
I have a 14lbs monster(not fat, just a big cat) hes cracked the glass top. Im moving stuff over to bigger tanks, and using mesh lids on those. They (have 3)are currently not allowed in the fish room without supervision. Im hoping with the mesh tops, they can check out the tanks. Link to comment
ReefWeeds
If you have a power bar that is within their reach make sure to hide it. One of our cats has turned the main power off for a few hours. Very good tip! We put all of our power bars in the cabinet for this reason Link to comment
ReefSafeSolutions
We've had at least one tank for a couple years, and the cats were 8 years old when we started the tank...the cats were honestly afraid of the tank haha. Now we have a couple and the cats don't even notice them. Link to comment
Odyssey350kc
My cat doesn't even notice the tank is there. He does love to chew power cords though, so i agree with everyone else, keep those hidden. Link to comment
