Cswan's 10 gallon Majano Pest Tank

FTS: March 24, 2015

I have one pink majano and a green majano but the green one has moved in between the rocks somewhere and I couldn't find it to take a picture.

Background:

So I kind of started this tank as an accident. A friend of mine had a buddy that bought a clownfish a while back and kept it in a 1 gallon, yes I said one gallon, tank from the time it was a small juvi. The dude decided he didn't want it anymore and was going to "set it free." My friend knew I had some experience with saltwater tanks and asked if I would take it. I said sure and grabbed an old 10 gallon from the garage, leak tested it and went out the the LFS to get some LR, sand and cultured water. Set the tank up, checked parameters and got the clownfish from the guy. Ended up also taking his blue green chromis when the tank was stable enough for the bio-load. I also added a coral banded shrimp and some snails and hermits. The fish seem to be much happier in the 10 gallon and they seem to be pretty healthy. This tank is sort of just a low budget tank and I want to keep the price as low as possible. I really liked how the scape turned out and decided I wanted to do something with it to add some color. So, when at my LFS I saw some colorful majano anemones and it gave me the idea for a majano pest tank. My LFS gives em to me for free and they come in some interesting colors and sizes. They also don't require a lot of light so it will help keep the cost down. I need some ideas as far as lighting and filtration go though. I currently have the stock light that came with my Fluval Spec V tank sitting on top just to add some sort of accent lighting but was thinking of getting some kind of cheap reef lighting. Maybe a par38 off of eBay from china? The problem is I would want a gooseneck mount for it. I want to keep the tank looking clean so no showing wires and what not. As far as filtration I just have a decent HOB filter and will be getting a koralia powerhead soon to add some extra flow. Can I get away with this option? If not what are your recommendations? Any opinions or feedback are welcome. :)

Cool tank, I've been waiting for someone to make a new pest tank for so long now. Have you considered aiptasia also?

Really I just use a cheap air canister filter when needed, which is rarely ever.

Thanks amphipod! I have considered aiptasia but ended up not doing it. This majano started out nice and pink and the green one I have (hiding somewhere in the tank) is still pretty bright. I think the pink one lost some color due to lack of light. Once I get a good light I think they will hold their color better. The aiptasia don't really have much color and color is what Im going for. Maybe I will add some aiptasia down the road though. Who knows... I don't have a plan set in stone. Just a low budget pest tank, it could go in any direction. :)

EDIT: Also, what air canister filter do you use?

Cheapest one I found, aqueon brand, advertised for freshwater but it really doesn't matter, they all work the same. I got mine for like 16 dollars air pump and everything.

One I love in my tanks is valonia algae, only issue is its really slow growing in low nutrients, like snails in molasses slow.

Good thing you are exempt from fear of introducing pests

Alright cool, thanks I'll look into the filter. Also, everyone feel free to share your ideas. This is a majano tank yes but can also house other pests (that won't pose a threat to my fish and shrimp) so all ideas and opinions are welcome! :)

diggin that LR shape on tank left. real nice ! GG on saving the clown too

Thanks, I lucked out on finding some sweet rock, and I plan to upgrade to a 20 gallon as soon as I have more room as a 10 gallon is still a bit too small for a big old clown like this guy.

Cute. I like the scape.

Thanks :) I love it, the rocks I found fit perfectly, nice and simple little overhang.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh this is fantastic!! It starts as a "Small budget" ... I give you 6 months and it'll be full :D :D :D

Looks really great, I like that rock on the right side too!!

hahaha! This is probably completely accurate. I am now looking into getting a frogspawn or hammer and a par 38.... I have a problem... lol

Also, does anyone know where I can get a full spectrum par 38 bulb for fairly cheap (anywhere under like $60-70)? Used is not a problem just don't want it to be too old.

Email those guys on Lightbox the link I sent you, they have some used bulbs they sell!! :) (Ones they used for a frag convention or show etc.) so you get discount!

Small, boring update...

I plan to progress on this tank but I am currently 2 weeks away from finals and want to focus on school and my main reef tank within that time frame. Once summer roles around I will have more time to work and will have more money to spend on my tanks. I have thought alot about my plans for this tank and want to do a couple things:

I would like to get a light for it (and plan to email lightbox, thanks for the tip Kihjo! :) ) as well as pick up some more majanos from my LFS since the ones in my tank are not reproducing very rapidly. This is probably due to the fact that there isn't much light on the tank and they may be a bit unhappy about it. I would also like to explore the idea of maybe putting some euphyllia corals in the tank. I need research this more as I don't want to put the euphyllia corals in danger of getting taken over by the majano's. What do you guys think about it? I am also thinking about upgrading the filtration in the future as well to the one amphipod suggested, or something similar. Hopefully I will start pushing out some progress and excitement in this thread for you guys very soon. Bare with me and stay tuned :)

. I think if you get a euphyllia it will be fine as long as the majanos aren't wandering too much, many anemone like to move around a little but too much is risky business and could mean bad water.

Small (not very exciting) update for everyone:

I decided to hold off on a light for a few months as I plan on getting a nano box mini tide for my spec v and going to move my current usa orbit to this tank. Here are a few pictures of the tank. The majanos were closed up cause I had the light off until about an hour ago. They also seem to have lost some color? Maybe due to very little light?

I'd say color loss was from light deprivation, as long as they aren't shrinking back they should be healthy. Amazing what they can thrive in

Interesting little tank. I Like.

That "green majano" potentially looks like Anemonia gracilis, a "graceful anemone". If so, not a majano.

Thanks man :) The green majano is a bit closed up in the picture but normally it is a bit longer. Although I looked up pictures of the two and they look super similar! It has already reproduced a few times though which is why I still believe it to be majano. Unless graceful anemones multiply just as fast?

Cute little things!

Thank you!! :D

Also, just a bit of an update... I woke up to no power this morning but everything still seems fine. I have a battery operated air pump in the tank now and the power should be back on soon.

Here's a pic of mine

In my tank it spreads very slowly, like, it splits about twice per year. Actually it usually splits when I go on vacation or something, and the tank parameters get a bit wonky and it gets upset lol

Thanks! Have been slacking on this tank. Haven't done much to it as a result of low funds and low amounts of time.

Cultured water is water from an established tank. It basically is loaded with beneficial bacteria. My LFS takes it out of one of their 150 gallon tanks and gives it to me. It can be used to avoid starting a nitrogen cycle
