Ricordea Question

Recommended Posts

I have 3 Florida Rics and 1 Yuma Ric. All of these are so very very small and I am trying my best to bring them back. I have been blaming my LED lights on them turning this way and recently resorted back to the PC 50/50 as my tank is only a 3 gallon.

A few weeks ago a fellow reefer gave me a beautiful Florida Ricordea, it has two mouths just a beautiful big Ric, he has all his Rics under LED lights high up in the tank. Noticing that this new Ric was starting to get a touch smaller under the PC lights today I put back on the LED and have it dialed down so not to stress anything out to much. This new Ric is huge under this light so it obviously had no issues with LED lights but my remaining 4 still look the same one looks a bit more expanded.

Is it possible to get bad Ricordeas all the time from the same LFS? I have bought all my Rics there since getting back in the hobby Nov 2014 and have had nothing but issues with every single one of them.

I don't know where he got this Ric he gave me if it was from her or not I am thinking it was his tank is of course bigger than mine but newer than mine as well. Just so strange how all the ones I got from her did so bad and this one he gave me is a beauty.

It's possible to get unhealthy rics (or any other corals) all at the same time from an LFS. Shipment delays, custom agents, temperature, etc. are stuff LFS deals with all the time and it's possible to have all DOA or half-alive from the moment the LFS gets their corals into the tank. I remember one LFS I frequent bought a huge shipment of zoas but they were all DOA due to delays + hot temp.

You can always try letting all of your floridas 'touch' each other; mines look bigger/fluffier if they're touching each other compared to being all alone.

Yes I have read that they like to touch I definitely will make sure that they do that with the few I have.

I know its hard for the LFS when getting corals it just seems so weird that all I got from this one place have done this and they were not bought all at once it was over the year.

Do you think there is any hope for Rics that are the size of an eraser head to come back? They both have color one better than the other.

Yup, I had rics that's smaller than an eraser head and they grew out fine. Just keep them happy and you'll have no problems with it.

I sure hope they come back, the PC light did not prove to be better as my new big beautiful Ric started to get smaller turn on the LED and its huge again, it was use to LED before I had it so just playing with the dimmer to find the sweet spot for them all. I also put one of the Floridas touching the poor Yuma and they are looking better. Guess they really like friends to be with.

Do you have any reason to suspect water quality?

In other words have I would test the water and see if anything is odd. I'm not specifically sure if rics are sensitive to anything in particular but it can't hurt.

Are any other corals doing poorly or not as well as you think they should?

Finally have you tried feeding them? They don't typically need to be fed, but it can sometimes help give them a boost.

Water quality is good, I do my water changes every 2 weeks. I also have sea fans and 2 zoa frags all are doing very well. I do feed the sea fans once a week and at that time will offer the ricks some too sometimes they take it other times they do not. I tend to have to clean of water at times so that is also an issue. The sea fans are growing well and are doing amazing so I am sure if there was a water issue they sure would show it. My one Rhodactis is growing and doing well too so it might just be these 4 struggling ones from the beginning. I am going to pick up a few more Rics but from a different place this time I have always had good luck with.

I almost think the current place get frags from their supplier whom just seems to frag and glue and ship so they might not be at their best when they arrive here either.
