setting up a system with a sump

So I'm in the process of setting up a paludarium. (I know not reef related but who knows more about sump than reefers)

My plan is to have about 8 inches of water. My question is where and how high do you think I should drill the holes? Both on the same back side or each end of the back? In my mind I'm thinking 5 or 6 inches high on each side of the back

any feedback would be appreciated!

The hole location won't make a huge difference. Sometimes the return is on the other side of the tank (in reference to the overflow); However, it can even be incorporated into the overflow. But I usually separate the two. It might depend on your aquascape.

I assume you're using an overflow similar to one of the Glass-Holes kits. If so, the desired water level will determine how high to drill the hole (measure 8" to the middle of the teeth and mark where the resulting hole would be). For the return hole, I usually place it just below the waterline.
