ProtectDa2nd
Hey guys looking to upgrade my HOB skimmer for 10g setup. Using a Seaclone and i'm ready to chuck it out the window . Let me tell you I have tried to adjust the thing every way possible. It's just not what i'm looking for. The pump in the DT looks horrible and micro bubbles like crazy. There is a filter on the pump and junk just floats right past it.. Money really isn't an issue. HELP! Link to comment
VW_TDI_02
AquaClear are usually considered the best HOB filter because they are so versatile. You can adjust the flow on them and they have a bunch of space for a variety of different medias. Sorry, for some reason I read HOB filter and not skimmer. I know reef octopus has a couple of nice ones with the Classic series. Link to comment
Haz-Matt
I searched for a while trying to find one for my 20h. I finally settled for an aquaticlife 115, it's not a hang on back as the whole thing sits in the tank but at least you don't ever have to worry about over flows. A side note though, it is a little noisy but there are YouTube videos on how to silence it. Link to comment
Lauraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Reef octopus are the best in my opinion Link to comment
kriskristofferzen
Aquamax HOB or the newer version with the cone seem popular. Link to comment
reefernanoman
Aquamaxx HOB1! I have never owned one but it has great reviews. Link to comment
hypes
I have a AquaOne Nanoskim 90 which is perfect size for my 64L tank. Its return is via a waterfall - my clowns love sitting under it, especially at night. I only paid £49.99 aswell, if you keep up with the carbon panel changes, your water will be crystal clear. I had to modify/dremel my tanks lid and the lip to fit it on, but wasn't too much hassle. http://www.aquaone.co.uk/nanoskim.php Link to comment
CrazyCarl
+1 for aquamaxx. Never owned any other HOB, but mine never disappoints. Link to comment
oceanhighz
I've been extremely pleased with my Eshopps PSK 100. Haven't owned the HOB octopus skimmers, however when I had their in sump skimmers a few years ago, I have to say I was less impressed than with my eshopps. Now, the newer octopus skimmers may be different but price of the eshopps is right especially if you find one used for a good price or new on ebay or something. Don't bother with the Aqua C skimmers, can't touch the others. Link to comment
jball1125
Do these HOB units make any noticeable noise? Link to comment
Bill Nye
I had a Reef Octopus bh1000 which many people claim is one of the best. With no other personal experience to compare this hob skimmer to I would say its ok but I could never get it to skim dry. I had it on a bare bottom 20 gallon long with 2 clown fish and a firefish so perhaps the bio load wasnt enough to get it to produce a thick head. I think all HOB skimmers are kind of junk but some people have success with them. I always worried about a flood when I had mine running. Link to comment
Markburns43
I kinda agree, one more piece of equipment, and your running a good hob filter assuming you got it loaded up with filter pads and a good media, water changes are a best friend =) Link to comment
AdamNC
For the past 10 years been using AquaC Remora. Might have to go with the Nano version for a 10 gallon. Link to comment
Dan R
With my 10 gal. tank I ran a AC50 w/ carbon and floss. I just increased my water change so I didn't have to dose or run a skimmer. It was only 1.5 gal. change a week keep my parameters where they should be. Link to comment
CrazyCarl
Do these HOB units make any noticeable noise? I have the Aquamaxx HOB-1 and yes it is noticeable, but not anything louder than an in sump skimmer IMO. My MP10 is louder, when ramping up and down. Link to comment
ProtectDa2nd
Yeah I've been reading a ton of people 10 under do not run skimmers. I was just so stuck after the seaclone boy was that a pos. But I picked up a ac 110 and running carbon gfo with weekly water changes and my water parameters have actually gotten a lot better. My phosphates went way down, algae is going away. All in all good info for maybe a future bigger setup Link to comment
