Mdodso00's 29 gal New Coral & Pics 7/1

Alright everyone. I broke down my 29 gal tank about a month ago for some house renovations. Took everything out of my tank and put it in 25 gallon buckets. Well long story short I ended up losing all my coral and a snowflake clown. So with the tank being broke down I was able to give everything a good clean and come back better than ever.

Heres some info on the tank:

29 gal standard tank

20H sump w/ fuge DIY

ATI 4x24W Lighting bulb combo (front to back) blue+, purple+, true actnic, blue+

eshopps HOB overflow

Seaclone Skimmer (still working like a charm)

Jebao wp10

Koralia (425gph)

No name return pump

Current stock:

1-Snowflake clown (had about 4 years)

1-Yellow Watchman Goby (about a year)

I put a picture of what my tank used to look like.

2nd picture was from back in August of this past year.

So when I started back up I put in 25 gal of new water and about 10lbs of new live sand. (hoping I don't go through a cycle)

Not sure what my overall plan is with the tank considering I am still a noobie at this stuff.

I do know I plan on adding another clown, hopefully a snowflake.

A pistol shrimp to go with my YWG.

Some sort of other shrimp, Coral banded, Cleaner, or Fire.

A group of 2 or 3 Banggai Cardinalfish

Maybe a wrasse of some kind (reef safe of course)

A fancy red colored Starfish

I'd love to get a flame angel but I just cant bring myself to get on with a reef tank.

As far as corals go.

Definitely some Zoas

Frogspawn/hammer/torch

Monti

Then after that I'm not real sure. I could use some guidance and input on coral.

I still need to get a CUC as I only have 2 little blue leg hermit crabs left.

Looks good so far. I've always liked the 'two islands' look for aquascaping!

It is growing on me. Was talking to a friend and I think I may try to widen the left island a bit and make the swim through bigger. It was also shorten it some. Do they look to close in size? I know in aquascaping with two islands you're supposed to make one bigger than the other.

Nah they look fine. Space for corals and good flow should be the primary concern anyhow. Looks sharp as it is.

Thanks. I definitely have good flow.

So about my sump. In my fuge I am thinking about putting sand in there. I already have some live rock but I'd like to know everyone's thoughts on sand.

So this weekend I am picking up a Tiger Pistol Shrimp to pair up with my goby fingerscrossed

Also going to get a CUC with about 10 snails and about 5 more hermits.

I saw the list the LFS got in yesterday and it has some of my dream fish on there but going to wait until April before I get anymore fish.

What's everyones thoughts on this light period? My Blue+ and True Actnic come on at 2PM for a "sunrise" effect and go off at 11PM, My other Blue+ and Purple+ come on at 330PM and stay on till 9PM, so my lights are at 100% for 5.5 hrs.

Thanks for looking.

So ended up going to a LFS and was able to get a tiger pistol shrimp. When I first put him in the tank I thought he wasn't going to make it. He was upside down and didn't look good at all. Contacted the store and let them know. They told me to put him in there anyways, that they sometimes act like that but end up pulling through. So I did and a few hours later he was doing good and clouding up my tank. Him and my goby have been hanging out in the same island together so I'm hoping they pair up.

I also got about 5 snails and 5 hermit crabs.

I'm going to let everything settle down for the next couple of weeks then add a fish or two before adding corals.

I reworked the scape on the right a little. You can see thats where my YWG is hanging out. And also my pistol has pulled through and is also hanging out in the same place, YAHOOOOO!!!!!!! :happydance: He has been going crazy in my tank. making all kinds of tunnels.

I'm going to get some more salt this week and plan on doing a 10 gal water change this weekend.

Looks great! Scape reminds me of mine. This size tank is so hard to get a scape that works with the dimensions.

I was actually doing some research on your tank when I decided to go with the two islands. You can tell what I used to do with the first pictures I posted but with me getting serious about this tank and actually going to get some good livestock I wanted to have room to let stuff grown out and fill it in.

I do like your tank a lot. I just can't get into the bare bottom tanks though.

I need to go back through your thread and do some research on your equipment.

Barebottoms not for everyone but for an sps system i must say it has been necessary. Granted there are plenty of great sps systems with sandbeds and such, but for my specific system it was needed. Takes awhile to get used to. If you have any questions let me know, make it easier so you dont have to go through my whole thread lol.

Here's a video my brother did from our dive trip this past summer down in the Bahamas.

Some more:

It will still be a couple of weeks but he's ready and I am too. The GSPs I got from a local are already going crazy. I'm trying to get a piece to climb the back glass.

So I did a 5 gal water change last night. I tested the water before I put it into the tank to see what my alk was because I thought it was a little low in the tank. So it tested out at 5. But I'm curious as to what you all keep your alk at? I noticed my alk was low in the tank and was doing fairly regular water changes (every other week) for about 2 months but nothing was looking good. (this was before I broke the tank down) I was using brightwell aquatics salt (only salt the LFS had) and I'm not a fan of that stuff. When you pour it into water it bubbles and gets extremely hot. I went back to Reef Crystals.

I plan on doing another water change in the day or two and will add a coral or two in the next week or so. I'm going to eventually put some SPS in this thing but won't for awhile.

But everything in the tank is going good. I tried to get a picture of the YWG and pistol the other night but they are too shy. My GSP are doing good and growing.

I'd also like to get yalls thoughts on livestock for this tank. I currently have a YWG and pistol with a Snowflake clown. My plan is to get another clown but I'm not sure on anything else. What do you guys think? Remember its a 29 gal tank.

Did another 5 gal water change this weekend and also went and bought a Banggai Cardinal. This little guy is pretty timid but was able to get him to come out and little last night and eat some.

Also bought Seachem Reef Fusion 1 and Fusion 2. My alk is pretty low so I will start dosing that to raise and maintain my levels so I can start adding some coral.

The pistol and YWG seem to have a new home every night. They've been all over the tank.

This week I'll do another 5 gal water change and start messing with my alk and cal and get them dialed in.

So went to a local reefer yesterday and got some speckled fire and ice zoas. Waiting for them to color up some more.

Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics.
