And you need to let your tank cycle buy the api 5in1 test kits and test everyday till you see zero ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates Link to comment

Snow_Phoenix
It is better to learn the concept of maintaining a salty tank by reading and researching first, rather than just going by trial-and-error. Mistakes can easily be avoided through proper reading and researching. It's costly to lose stuff in salt - it's not like fresh. And usually when the system goes downhill, it takes everything along with it. BM, I strongly suggest you poke around the forums for some old threads on how to cycle a salt tank etc. Also get some good test kits - API is usually inaccurate and the test strips aren't even good enough for fresh, let alone salt. Try to get Salifert if you can. Also figure out how much flow you want in that tank and plan out what you think you're going to keep in it - what sort of corals etc. Read up as much as you can and always ask questions on here. Also, make full use of the search function on NR to dig up old threads and read through them. You can also have a look at past TOTMs to see their setups and livestock choices as well. Link to comment

He's just cycling right now he doesn't need to spend an $30 on some test strips yet, for now api will do and yes I agree with you completely research is key but instead of us grilling him we now should help him due to the fact he's already got it set up, I suggest if you plan on keeping corals you should switch to Red Sea coral pro salt or you can use instant ocean reef crystals I just like the consistency of Red Sea, but also like Phoenix stated search up the cycling process here on NR and he gave good advice about TOTM, they have been successful and their threads will point you down the right path Link to comment
2004jeeplaredo
The stock pump wont be great. Even with a power head added. Everyone upgrades to the minijet 606 if you can find one. In the mean time just removing the adjustable nozzle on the outflow will almost double the flow. It restricts the water alot. Also a ATO is wonderful. My salinty is rock solid and i can leave for a week with now isssues or worries. Link to comment

Juuls
Welcome I am sure you will have a wonderful tank, but these forums are great, I am still reading. It keeps going too just when you think you had read as much as you can about something you find more. it's been quite a fascinating experience. I admire anyone who sets up their own tank up, I employed some help just to get me through and teach me, as well as to cycle my tank. It's great to have a wonderful LFS, they will no doubt be an invaluable source of information and support. I do not really know much but it may be a good idea to investigate what you want to put in the tank too before upgrading, some corals can be picky about water movement, light and quality, from there maybe you could decide what to upgrade to. I also read that lots of people wish they had got the correct lights earlier rather than buy a few before getting to some good ones? Link to comment
