SPS Dead 1/2 Way Up - How to Save It?

I was given a piece of SPS by a friend about 4 months ago and it was my first piece of SPS ever. I don't even know what it is (any identification help would be great) and It was at a time when I was really struggling with my tank.

Anyway, it appears to be dead 1/2 up (look at the 2 pictures below).

So what should I do? Cut it off? Leave it alone?

I am a super noob with SPS, so any input/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hard to tell on my phone, but it looks like the lower half has been dead for a while? If so, you could leave it. It will keep growing normally, but unless it's an encrusting sps, that spot will always be dead. If its new dead tissue, it's best to cut it so it doesn't continue spreading.

Do you test for alk/cal/mag yet? I guarantee the dead tissue is from an alk issue.

The lower half has been dead for at least 2 months, BUT I have no idea what kind of SPS it is (so not sure if it is encrusting).

Yeah I am pretty sure it was an alk issue too... My GFO threw off my alkalinity for a while until I figured it out and got it into check...

most likely alk swing ...it happens :(

I was just wanting to know what I need to do to it? Do I need to cut off the dead part or what?

I haven't had good luck with cutting off the dead part maybe others can chime in

I have saved some by just keeping all parameters really stable and using amino acids, but it took a few months to recover.

Looks like birdsnest from the pic? usually one of the easier SPS to keep. Testing water params always first place to check to trouble shoot.

It is not the birds nest, it is the one to the right of the birds nest.

I am not worried about water params, etc. I am wondering about whether or not to get rid of the dead part or leave it alone or what to do...

I've always left mine. Not for any particular reason. I just didn't want to mess with it while it recovers. If it's been a couple months since the die off, I'd leave it.

And you should consider testing and dosing. Once your parameters are stable, you can wake up in the morning and check out the new growth on all your sps. It's super fun and not very difficult. Before I started testing and dosing, all my sps frags didn't grow a millimeter. Soon as I stabilized alk/cal/mag, growth took off.

I guess I am going to leave it alone for now (I hate that it looks bad, but I do not want to hurt it).

Any idea what kind of SPS it is?

I am only doing Kalkwasser in my ATO now and everything has been somewhat stable (for a 20g at least). I added the GFO and did not realize there was an alk issue because my Hanna Checker Alk reagent was bad expired.

After I figure that out and got it into check things have been much better. I still need to get more regular about checking my params since I now have more SPS then I originally did...

Regarding your SPS, I have nothing helpful to add...I just wanted to say sweet hammers!! They look amazing, so if that SPS doesn't make it, at least you have some great hammers! :D

Thanks! I am glad you noticed them. Hammers are my favorite. If things go bad with the SPS then this might become a euphyllia tank.

If you want to cut it off you can, if you want to leave it alone you can. At this point (2 months later) either option will be fine and the damage is done. That said if you cut it off it could get an infection or get pissed off and die some more. If you leave it it will grow over itself with time, but you will need to keep it algae free otherwise it will slow that growth big time.

Personally I'd cut it off, even if you just cut it off a little below the live portion so you minimize your risks and don't lose anything that is still alive.
