nanonoob123
Hi everyone, new to reef keeping. I have kept a biocube fowlr tank before but moving to a 40b. I have a few questions as I am still doing all this research. I have a drilled 40b, It doesn't have internal overflow box, I was wondering If I just run a 90degree elbow for the overflow how does that work over running internal overflow box. Tank was drilled by previous owner who took off the internal overflow box to keep it. I plan on running one bulkhead for the overflow to the sump, one with strainer to drain water for water changes, and one is for the return. The overflow is a 1inch bulk head. What would by average drain rate be? I currently have a mag 12 laying around I plan on using for the set up. How do I get a screen/strainer to cover the overflow so livestock doesn't go in? Water drain whole is a 1inch bulkhead. Return is 3/4 that I plan on adding locline attachment. Will this overall process work or should I change it up. See photos for what I currently have mocked up. Filled with fresh water to water test the fittings but they are not set and stone as I am just testing out the set up. Thank you in advance, excited to get this going. I will need more assistance in lighting and etc also. Link to comment
HeyJay
An inverted elbow will work in theory, but you miss out on the surface skimming that is a huge benefit of an overflow box. A mag 12 will be way too much for a 40 breeder, and probably more than your drain could handle. A mag 5 or 7 would be more in the right neighborhood. Link to comment
