How many LED strips would you recommend?

Hi,

I am looking into buying an Innovative Fusion Nuvo 10. I'm a poor college kid, so I'm looking for some cheap alternatives to setting this thing up.

I have decided that I want to go the LED route. Right now, I'm looking into a Par30 bulb. However, I came across these LED strips from ecoexotic.

My first question: Size of LEDs. The tank is 12x15x13. Should I go with 12" lights, or keep to their mini Pico strips, which are 6"?

Second want is color. I'm not a fan of tanks that have a purple/red color to them. I prefer blue, but not too blue. Just enough to make the bright colors of the coral pop.

Third, is my coral. I would like to keep SPS up high in the tank. Just some hardy Acros and Monti caps.

Maybe I can even combine the sizes? The Pico size don't have only 445nm Blue strips, so maybe one 12" 445nm blue, and two 6" 12K White/453nm Blue pico strips? I dunno.

Thanks!

EDIT: OH, one more thing. What would be the best DIY method to mount these?

I wouldn't recommend going low-end with LED lighting. If you're on a budget, take a look at the Coral Compulsion PAR30 and PAR38.

Like Ben said,par30 or 38. Or you could go balls to the wall and grab a RapidLed Nano driver which is capable of 36v @700mA and get 3 Luxeon M's (2x royal blue and 1x 4k) which would bring you to 33v and maybe be able to throw a 430nm Hyper Violet in there.

I say a par bulb though :)

I bet for the same cost of the par bulbs you could DIY a couple of nano-box pucks.

Really? Do tell me how.. or point me in a direction that could help me out. Thanks!

Ahhh,I wouldn't go that far. Dave's boards are what $55 ? All he'd need is one board for the Fusion 10.

V3 board-$55 + shipping

Heatsink-$20 shipped

Hanging Kit-$17 shipped until you can diy a hanging kit from a local place

If you go the Storm route for control that's $68 or so shipped.

Open Frame 150-200w PSU $40 -/+

Coralux 2up LDD board about $10 shipped

2x700mA drivers $16 shipped. Plus $15-$20 for misc parts. Already exceeding the par bulb amount with just the storm and led board. It goes up another probably $30-$40 if you want to control all 4 channels and not just 2. For all that you may as well just have Dave put you together a Tide.

Or you can do:

V3 board-$55

Heatsink-$20

2x RapidLED Nano Drivers w/ pots for dimming-$60 + shipping.

Digital Timer-$20

Or

2x Luxeon True Blue-$6

2x 12w Luxeon M Royal Blue's-$22

1x 12w Luxeon M 4000k White-$11

2x 430nm Hyper Violets-$9

2x RapidLED Nano Drivers-$60

1x Digital Driver-$20

1x Hanging Kit-$10-$17

Pick what you think would be best lol.

Right, my mistake he'd only need one. With only one light it'd be hard to beat the Par options I guess. Might be worth it though he ever plans to upgrade though.

Absolutely, even with one board,he could get 350-400 par with dave's board.

Price breakdown for what I mentioned:

Choice 1 would run around $250 give or take a few bucks which as much as a Tide . Choice 2 would be cheaper at $170 give or take and choice 3 would be a lot cheaper at $145 give or take and still yield awesome if not outrageous par numbers and yet dimmable and have control over his spectrum.

And I lied,I forgot the voltage (even if he used to channels ) would be too much for 2x 36v drivers. That's why I was going to go with a Maxspsct Razor board for a retro. But I may use some Luxeon M's instead.

He could run 1 13up puck off 2 nano drivers from Rapid. I personally would do this,

Nanobox puck - $55

Heatsink - $15 - $20

Drivers, board and dip sockets - $30

Meanwell CLG-60 P/S $30 - $35

Typhon (because budget) $50

Maybe the V1 or V2 but not this board. Ch1's voltage alone is 41.9 (I'm assuming that's either taken at 700 or 1000mA) already surpassing the 0-10v's capabilities.

He could also use a CLG-150-36A right ? Since they're only like $9 on eBay. I have one and I love them.

Where are you coming up with 41.9 volts? I'm literally looking at it right now and channel 1 is 13.6 @ 350mA 14.0 @ 700mA and 14.3 @ 1000mA.

Wow,I'm a dumbass. I stand corrected lol. Carry on,I honestly fudged all those numbers up... Nvm lol.
