better cool blue?

Since I started, we have Luxeon K royal blues and Vero whites, which make life so much easier than 3 watt leds on big tanks. But do we have any better ~470nm blues? I see the Luxeon and XTE2 3 watt leds. Anything else to be aware of? Which is better?

As far as I know the xte2 and the rebel are still what you want to go for as far as 470nm is concerned. As far as which is better, it used to be the xte2 from ledgroupbuy was better because the rebel from Steve's was too close to the cyan. But Steve's did have 470nm blues that were as good as the xte2. I'm not sure if its still the same though. Maybe jedimasterben can chime in on this?

I think the best you are going to get in that regard in terms of simple high intensity is a 3-up or 4-up with all blue. The alternative might be the Chinese multichip LEDs in 10W and higher packages, but they wouldn't be my personal go-to.

I haven't seen a new 465-470nm in years. I've been through all the common sites we buy LEDs from, and all the 'cool blues' I've ordered lately have been closer to 480, which is cyan'ish / green to my eyes. If you want a true, 465-470nm bin LED you're probably going to have to order a bin specific reel of several thousand.

You guys can keep the cyans. I don't like them.

Oddly I've bought three 462nm 2watt laser diodes over the past 6 months, and one of those was a manufacturing freak of nature and tested around 468nm. If you think 470nm pops colors on Acans and Zoas like nobody's business you should see how cool it is in a laser projector.

Shorter wavelengths might be too close to the Luxeon rbs and not flourece different pigments. I personally don't mind a greener light - not as good for showing coral color, but looks more natural.

The 465-470nm color range pops oranges and reds like nobody's business, especially in acans and zoas whereby those colors don't respond much to classic actinic (420nm)or royal (448-455). I've posted threads showing the unique things 470nm does.

Greener light actually desaturates some colors...it just looks brighter to our eyes.
