Reef reset button

Despite my obsessively frequent searches of Amazon, I have not seen one of these buttons. I have wondered for some time if a complete remodel of my reef-scape might actually be worth it. This probably would involve taking all of the rock out and trying some layouts.

This project/crazy idea sprang from my frustration and to solve three issues, some of which I'm sure I've created in my own mind:

1 the live rock layout has made adding new frags troublesome due to lack of useful space, and the feng shui is terrible and screwin up my chi.

2. Some 75+ Aptasia have begun a hostile takeover of the reef, though much reduced in number.

3. As a victim of the advice on this forum, my plate coral has tripled in size and outgrown his patch of sand.

Other considerations

Having seen the plate coral, and not to be outdone, a small Montipora frag has grown from the liverock to to glass and up the side about 3 inches and now occupies about 30% of the tank

Some other encrusting corals such as an Acan, may limit any possible future arrangements

Despite an ongoing pitched battle, many of the Aptasia are 'hull-down' in some crags of rock outside my reach (some Aptasia-X has been effective, to a point)

Two fish in the 20g display, black ocilaris and a dottyback.

An approx. 9g sump, Melev-inspired acrylic, with some rock and Caulerpa and sand.

Tank established about 4 yrs ago

Actual questions, finally

Is it actually useful and/or necessary?

Too much stress or ammonia cycle stuff created?

Inadvisable due to breaking corals like the Montipora or other stuff I can't see.

Should the reef Jenga occur inside the tank or outside.

If outside, how much time out side the water is too much?

One tip to remove the aiptasia, point a strong current on them and collect them when they drop

Bergia nudibranch can destroy every last aiptasia

I did a minor shuffle of my live rock this weekend. And it stirred up a lot of shit. I'm happier with the scape and so is my yellow clown goby... most of the time. I'm thinking about doing way with all the live rock and just hanging heaters in the tank. The fish seem to like the shelter of the heater and cords

nothing wrong with a rockless setup as long as the sand is live enough, or a refugium.

I will be following this. I have been taking a few rocks out lately to improve my flow.

what are you doing wit the rocks after?

I just set them in the sun to kill everything including the GHA I have been struggling with. I've been slowly changing the tank around a little doing my own reset. The rocks will either be given to a friend that's doing a 40B build or saved for future build.

Did you notice a change in your parameters or some sort of algae bloom?

Yes and no... I added stock so expected a parameter shift. Here's my build thread: http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/357755-20h-starter/I do my best to included that stuff. But didn't this time. I checked parameters. 8.4pH, ammiona, nitrites, nitrates all 0. Salinity 1.023 and temp 78 I added stock, yellow clown goby, mushroom coral and 3 stocks of xenia on Thursday and about a 7 head colony of zoas on Friday. Friday is also the day I shifted my scape. I waited until Sunday to check my parameters and my ammonia was up to 0.25pps. Everything else the same. The salinity reading of 1.023 is with my hydrometer. I buy premixed saltwater and requested and verified calibration of their refractometer and check the salinity at pickup.

I had a nasty case of Aptasia long ago but learned a simple trick called "Peppermint Shrimp" The little bastards had it all eliminated in a week! The only corals they ever snagged were 2 frags that were dying off and wouldn't have lasted anyways and aside from those they have never touched a single coral in my tank, and the only aptasia I have seen since is behind the false wall
