Considering Changing Reef's

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

As you may remember, i'm the guy with this tank. Anyways, I am considering changing to a PJ Reef. This primary reason behind this is the smaller size would actually be a bit better for me, and they are marketed as "easier" to maintain. The one thing that scares me is that there is no filtration in the tank... just want to hear everybody's thoughts on that.

A slightly unrelated question, how do people recommend I clean the sides of a circular tank? Had decent luck with magnets, but overall not working too great.

Thanks! B)

Holy crap, those tiny things are $300! Why not spend the same amount of money on a 3-5g AIO pico? Its the same maintenance; temp, water top off, and weekly water changes. I honestly think that half the fun of having a marine tank is working on it but that is just me.

This is a 5 gallon pico for half the price. The only maintenance would be a a weekly .5-1g change at most.

Hi, I like the idea, but i'm trying to downsize and keep is small. preferring something about 1g or smaller.

Why not just find a smaller jar, something around 1 gallon. Then use an airpumps/airstone with a valve to set your desired amount of water movement.

within a consideration. I just like the AIO approach that they have, but I agree, would not be a bad idea.

How can it be all IN one with nothing IN it?

With no flow and no way to maintain temperature.. it just seems questionable.

Waste of time an AIO in something that small in my opinion, not to mention way overpriced! You could mimic almost the exact same thing for under $150 from store purchased components.

With the tiny amount of water you would just need movement lighting and heating, I would also go bare bottom so as not to collect detritus and make for easier water changes/flush thorough.

Good luck though with whatever way you go :D

Agreed, one of my main points is to make it bare bottom. Although, I don't see an easy way to mimic the same thing. especially getting it to be nearly AIO.

Thats true IF it was a true all in one unit, however with the PJ Reef you are only buying a small cookie jar with a LED light..... for $300

Just to run an the costing exercise and forgive me is my prices are a bit out:

1Gal Jar $13.12

http://www.amazon.com/1-gallon-USDA-Fermentation-Glass-Jar/dp/B006ZRBGSC

Par30 LED Lamp (21w) $21.69

Hydor Mini Heater $9.99

Aqualifter 3.5GPH $15.99

http://www.amazon.com/Aquarium-Lifter-3-5gph-inches-height/dp/B001BOD9JI/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1425345343&sr=1-1&keywords=aqualifter

LED Goose-neck $49.99

http://www.ebay.com/itm/REEF-CLAMP-LAMP-LIGHT-FIXTURE-FOR-PAR38-AND-PAR30-FISH-TANK-AQUARIUMS-/111606630332?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19fc4607bc

TOTAL= $110.78 and this has a heater and water movement, also you can adjust the height of your light with the goose-neck. :bling:

I don't know what you want to keep in there for livestock, but head over and have a look at Brandon's Pico's and it will give you an understanding of what can be achieved long term.

Thanks! Yea, I have been in contact with Brandon on and off for over a year now.

I'm also considering this as a replacement tank. Unsure how big a cycle will be if I transfer over my corals and some of the water. Will not transfer over the sand and will go bare bottom now.

Thoughts on the tank?

Cool looking little tank!

Don't forget that with a "Cookie Jar" you can see 306 degrees (which is pretty cool sometimes)

They're only $130. I believe the deluxe kit actually comes with some livestock.

Curious - Wouldn't be trying to clean the glass on this be a pain? Especially since most of the stock would have to be touching the glass due to space constraints?

but it still doesn't come with a heater or pump for water movement. That's just for the jar, lamps, and a magnet.

If the person who designed the pj jar had half a brain he would of included a heater in the base and drilled the jars from below to allow an airline up the center. All bases covered and then maybe it would be worth $100 per setup. It has potential, but is a long way from complete...

Its actually pretty simple, a mate of mine has a "Jar" and he has a small 1 inch metal rod that he dipped in epoxy and wrapped in some type of thin filter floss/wool.

It cleans fine because it is cylindrical and just rolls around the corners.

As for the stock touching the edges, it is as simple as making a central pillar (its only 1gal so you cant really put too much in there without making it look like a rubbish tip) and placing frags on that.

Cool thanks for the description, and you're right I wasn't thinking of it as a 360* setup with a column in the middle
