Coral Research and Careers

Hi all,

I am currently working on finishing my undergrad, with a major in biological sciences and a minor in biochemistry. Hoping to apply to grad school next year.

My orginal plan for school was to go into the medical field. While I still like that idea, and feel like I wouldnt mind working in a hospital, I feel I could do something more interesting, even if it means a lesser paycheck.

So I got down to thinking about something I'm passionate about. I have always loved the ocean and marine life, and would like to pursue a career in research.

I'm wondering if any of you have dovated your time to the research of coral reefs? It is without a doubt that humans have negatively impacted reefs, and if things do not change we will see continue to the decline of them. I am particular interested in researching the genetics of coral, and the possibly modification of genes to help them thrive in the changing conditions of the ocean.

So is there a market out there for this type of research? I feel like the implications of this would help both the wild coral and the hobby.

Sorry, probably could have done without most of the info in this post, but thanks for any help!

I would look into aquaculture and reef restoration. I am pursuing this career and have been working with Mote Marine Laboratories here in Florida. I started off as wanting to be a lawyer but then really just needed to do something I would be passionate about and enjoy. Don't follow the money, follow the passion. If you love your job you will never work a day in your life.

Thanks for the info. I have been looking into Motes website a little bit. You guys have very interesting research programs. I would have loved to apply to one of their internship programs for this coming summer but the deadline is in a few days. Are you on a research team? Intern?

Mote Marine is a great facility and the people there are amazing and very passionate about what they do. I am currently in the student labs as part of a program at my university. I am also just a volunteer at the moment as I would like to experience every aspect of mote, volunteering, internship and hopefully one day a career. I have really been enjoying myself while I am there. Are you in the area? They are having Dr. Vaughn come and give a lecture on Monday at 7:30 about Restoring Our Reefs. Admission is $15 and the proceeds go towards Mote Marine's research efforts. If you live close by it seems like it will be very interesting and worth the time. I will be there.

I'm not in the area or from the area. But I noticed there is a facility in Boca Grande where I do spend most of my summers. I should be there for most of my spring break coming up soon too.

I'm going to apply to there internship programs next year. I hope to graduate next December, so I may be there in the spring next year!
