HannahMontana808
Hello all, I am getting a new lid cut for my ecoxotic ECOPICO reef because I got a MAME Skimmer and it doesn't fit with the current lid. Right now the lid is made out of standard (green) glass, I was wondering if that glass absorbs any significant amount of light from my nanobox lights. If so, should I get the new lid made out of a different type of glass (ie low iron, starphire, etc.) that will absorb less light? Thanks!! Link to comment
Sancho
I go topless. As long as the glass isnt tinted standard glass works. Why do you need a lid? do you have jumpers? Link to comment
HannahMontana808
The evaporation is nuts in my house and yes I'm worried my crazy fish might jump. Link to comment
seabass
Less evaporation means less cooling and less gass exchange (often higher CO2 and lower pH). However, with proper gas exchange (often from a skimmer), a top can lead to lower energy consumption, less top off water needed, and less contaminants getting into your tank (or fish getting out of your tank). Standard glass will work, but it does have a greenish tint. You're right, a low iron glass will be clear. You'll still have to keep it clean to avoid additional light reduction. Unfortunately, thin acrylic warps too easily. Link to comment

CatfishSoupFTW
all glass seems to kill quite a bit. I guess you can say you can argue it, but another issue is evaporation on it, and cleaning it sucks. Acrylic would be great as well, but again cleaning it and evap. The evaporation occurs quickly through in the dryer seasons when the air isnt as humid. Because I have jumpers , and have lost fish to jumping, but actively knew glass isnt the best option or acrylic, I made a lid with a window screening kit, and some chicken wiring with quarter inch spacing. window mesh diffused too much light, but the quarter inch does super well. little to no light lost. Its not as pretty as when i remove the top. but to save on some flying fish, i do it. i take off the lid to show case it or for when i want to see it. but for when im not home, its great !
