Real Reef live rock

Having never seen it in person its hard for me to buy something that I havent held. I want to change my current Scape in the nano and would rather not have to buy LR from LFS. (pests) I do use Marinepure biospheres in my system and dose bacteria so im not worried about the actual cycle, just the leaching of nutriets from stuff like dry rock.

I walked into an LFS here in Australia (Queensland) and they have an almost identical product just labeled as "Real Rock" (it may be that exact product, who knows)

I didn't like the look of it myself, it was painted on and looked too "Purple Heavy" in my eyes the paint looked to be taking away any porosity of the rock itself, plus the fact that it was quite heavy for the size of it compared to the stuff we get from the Great Barrier Reef or Carib Sea's dry base rock.

I have 60lbs cycling for my upgrade. It's not bad. the purple does look fake but eventually it will be covered in coralline. It's very cleaN and poroua. That's what I love about it. Prefer this look to the white base look of live rock while waiting for coralline to grow.

I actually decided to go with BRS Pukani. I currently have my 25g set up so I can wait until this rock fully cures before placing in the tank. The reason I decided to go with the Pukani is I can sculped it to a scape I want. The real reef is nice becasue it can be used instantly. But knowing me I would want something custom in the long run.

All the stuff I saw looked like it was rolled in some thick paint as the painted parts were only on the outside of the rock and not into the nooks and crannies. Looked fake as hell. Also, the paint looked rather thick and non-porous to me. I also have no idea how that paint is going to hold up over time and use, or even what the paint is.

Maybe this would be OK in a FOWLR tank with some of that fake day-glo painted coral like they make on that one TV show. :ninja:

I don't know how you're so hung up on the color of the rock when it's just going to get covered in coralline and coral.. won't see it anyway *shrug*

I saw some in my LFS a few weeks ago, looks fine. I'm sure it works fine. I would just go with normal dry rock because it's cheaper, though.

Agree that long term it doesn't much matter esthetics wise, but I did also mention that the paint is a bit of a mystery and that it looks to be non-porous. Two things I do not want in live rock. I also think that the marketing for this rock is a bit of a stretch too, "Real Reef"?

I guess I am hung up on the paint because it isn't at all necessary and is being used as a sales gimmick.

Ah yeah I feel you there.. I don't like heavy handed marketing gimmicks either lol I could see this being one, but I honestly never gave it a second look.
