FTS From Day One - 4/12/15: Tank #1 has really been an experiment. I started out with a used tank and stand, which came with rocks, sand, and a couple of leathers. I have since filled it up with all different types and colors of corals, just because I wanted to try a little of everything. From early on I started to have tank envy of those who got to pick out and plan every aspect of their tanks from the beginning. Many get to have a “vision” of what they want their tank to look like and how it would (ideally) grow, but I was literally given a box of rocks and threw some random stuff in. The Inspiration Simone’s Mandarin Motel/Manor I love the colors in this tank – greens, purples, blues, pinks, and oranges, but without looking too pastel or muted. I really want to color-coordinate/plan my next tank a little better. For a while I had a lot of green in my tank, because it’s my favorite color. I want to balance my color choices better this next time around. Miyra’s and FlowerMama’s RFA Tanks RFA’s are freaking beautiful! I plan to have 4-6 in the new tank. I already have 2 in my current tank, and will move them over if I can. Seriously though, gorgeous little creatures! Metrokat’s Fish Nook What a cute and cozy idea to have a fish nook for relaxing and a special chair for viewing! Unfortunately, in my case, life happens and I have moved 15 times in the last 10 years. It’s exhausting. But I’m starting to settle down and have made the decision to stay in my current apartment at least until the fall, if not longer. I re-arranged my furniture, got a new chair from my mom, and have a “nook” set up and ready for a new tank! Other inspirations come from; ninjamyst, cindyp, HVani, TeenyReef, owenj, TigerLily, gena (and many others) so you should check out their build threads if you haven’t already! Link to comment

I check every day for my tax refund to clear my account. As soon as it does, I'm ordering all the things! Link to comment

ninjamyst
Can't wait to see the new tank up and running! What are you gonna use for rocks??? The initial planning stage is so exciting. Link to comment
kimberbee
What are you gonna use for rocks??? Definitely dry rocks. I've had a bunch of aiptasia pop up in my tank over the last few months and aiptasia-x is not working. I've hit them multiple times and they will "die" for a few weeks, then pop up bigger. I'm thinking I'll put some decent sized pieces of rock in the back chambers of the BC for a few weeks and use that along with a cupful of sand to seed the new tank. I like that I'll be able to break/glue stuff up together without worrying about the rocks being out of water or hurting anything living. Link to comment
ninjamyst
Where are you gonna get the dry rocks from? BRS? Reefcleaners? Local? Link to comment
kimberbee
Where are you gonna get the dry rocks from? BRS? Reefcleaners? Local? Reefcleaners is at the top of my list right now. I would get them "local" from where my BF works, but I don't want to be greedy with his discount that he may be able to use on my tank. I like that I can get a box o rocks at a specific size with shipping included. What I really need to do now is decide what color the NanoBox should be! Link to comment
gena
AWESOME~ new tank thread. won't be long now . What light colors are you leaning towards? Link to comment
kimberbee
AWESOME~ new tank thread. won't be long now . What light colors are you leaning towards? Such a hard decision!! If I go with colors I like, I would end up with a black fixture with dark green or dark blue accents. If I go with something that matches, I might get lighter green, blue, pink, or purple with white. But I'm worried that might be too matchy-matchy if that's the same colors I'll be looking for in corals. Maybe a sky blue with white accents? That would be sky/cloud colors. Think Dave would put a little yellow sun decal on the top for me?? Link to comment

owenj
omgomgomg following along :-D I have a lot of leftover dry rock from RC & some that I got from Marine Depot. Will pm you Link to comment
teenyreef
Moving this on over... Yay! There's still ice cream Definitely following along - I can't wait to see what you come up with! I wouldn't worry about the colors on the Nanobox being too close to the colors of the inhabitants. For me at least, my eyes seem to process "inside" the tank differently from "outside" the tank anyway. Link to comment

Between the picture window to the left behind the couch, and the tall bookshelf in the right corner, there is a LOT of open space above the tank and chair. I think I need some wall art or something up there. Link to comment
kimberbee
Ok everyone, here's the Plan: IM Nuvo Fusion 20 w/ stock stand, upgraded and split return pumps, and RW-4 for extra flow. InTank media baskets, one with filter floss, carbon and phoslock, the other with cheato (as a mini fuge). NanoBox Duo… color TBD, and suggestions are welcome. CUC will be snail only, and likely will include an anemone shrimp. Planning a rock flower nem “garden” and an acan “mountain” filled in with wavy gorgonians and leathers. Fish ideas include: mandarin, pink streaked wrasse, bangaii cardinal, pipefish, and clown gobies. I am aware that 3 of those options are heavy pod eaters. I will probably narrow that choice down to 2 - one for this tank and one for the biocube. Thoughts welcome here as well! Link to comment
cnseekatz
My only suggestion is to go bigger than you originally think! You'll want the extra room. Link to comment
kimberbee
My only suggestion is to go bigger than you originally think! You'll want the extra room. I would if I could, but two tanks in a one bedroom apartment is pushing it as it is!! I was really surprised my landlord ok'ed another tank. I wouldn't have asked (kept it hidden ), except that both tanks are in the living room and glow into the parking lot! Next upgrade will be to something in the ~50 gallon range and will take the place of the biocube. Link to comment

owenj
Rock went out yesterday, let me know if you didn't get a shipping confirmation email from Paypal & I'll dig out the receipt with the tracking #. For the sake of your own sanity, I probably wouldn't get a mandarin and a pipefish for the same tank. Going to be hard enough making sure everyone gets enough food as it is My PSW eats anything offered, so while I'm sure he eats pods, definitely not a requirement. I have a white body Tide with green accents that I like. Can't remember what color my Duo is going to be I think it's got red, but can't remember if that's the body or accent. Link to comment

No, I know not to get all pod-eaters for one tank. Though... I did come home with a pod-eater for my biocube today... Link to comment
