Need an ID - *Hell's Fire Nems

Hey all,

My other tank now has 4 of these, all at different sizes. Guy at LFS gave me another one yesterday and deduced they were a sort of nem, but unsure of species.

They all move by themselves, fix themselves to the rock work when they find a suitable spot and all have EXTREMELY sticky tentacles. All of them are able to deflate/inflate themselves, so leads me to believe it's not any kind of echinoderm. None have a skeleton. All accept meaty foods.

Picture of the tube of one burrowing into substrate.

Top down of one that is already attached to rock work.

And the same one eating. They readily accept pieces of really large meaty food.

Does anyone have any idea what they could be?? Have been wanting to find an ID for a while now but haven't been able to find anything remotely like them anywhere.

You sir, are a legend. Thank you! The amount of time I have wasted with Google to no avail... Lol. Have you come across these before or something?

I like what Nano Sapiens said.

Me too! Nowhere near as nice as your rock nems though haha.

Those are badass

Thanks man!

You just need the right reference material (hint: 'The Reef Aquarium' three volume series by Sprung/Delbeek) ;)

Beware, if this is what you indeed have, they sting like the devil and are fish eaters!

But, they are cool B)

Those would make an awesome species tank though, I love how frilly they are, they almost look like leathers.

Honestly thought I had a bunch of boring old Kenya tree polyps originally, glad I didn't get rid of them. Well this guy makes number 4 in the no longer a quarantine tank, so a species tank is halfway there I guess! :D

Haha, will keep that in mind for future reference. Thanks a bunch.

I'm just reading that, and they can get up to 10 inches?? Maybe 4 being in a 10 gallon is not going to have a happy ending...?

Four anemones the size of dinner plates in a 10g...that would be a sight to see :)

No wonder the lfs wanted to get rid of them..

And here I was thinking I was just getting an awesome freebie! I'm sure there will be someone local to take them when they get too big.. Hopefully..

Fortunately they are only around 1-2 inches currently.. I'll get onto feeding them a bit more frequently and see if I can get this Godzilla nem tank happening! ;)

You can call it "Little Tokyo".

I'm thinking after some picture observing megalactis

Coolest anemone ever :)

solution is bigger tanks, then bigger tanks then make them come on land and destroy entire cities while battling varied other giant monsters

Bigger the better

Aren't they fun! They're so cool to feed, the biggest got stuck on the pipette and would not let go, nearly ripped it out of the sand trying to get it back lol.

You joke Amphipod, but when I've got 120cm of evil anemone goodness, your suggestion will be that more plausible.

Here he is all settled in!

Looks like a snowflake, I think it's really cool anyway because I've not seen this anywhere in my 2 yrs here.

I'm getting that impression from a lot of people. I had two attached as hitchhikers on a zoa rock, thought they'd be way more common!

That is a pretty unique nem!!

Thanks :) I'm pretty excited to see how big they'll get

I'm wondering how big you can grow him, also wondering if he will split into more nems like some have the habit of doing. I now wonder what an anemone based horror movie would be like?

I'm hoping it splits! Got them under 165W LED's, going to feed 2-3 times a week. If that doesn't encourage them to split, I give up. This reference is a bit vague;

"The Actinodendron species have not been bred in captivity. Anemones in general can multiply by sexual and asexual means. One way is using fission, which is when they actually split in half from the foot or mouth to form a clone, although the clone is its own animal, similar to twins - http://animal-world.com/Aquarium-Coral-Reefs/Hells-Fire-Anemone"

Guess we will wait and see. Haha there are enough bad 'horror movies' without adding Anemonaraptors into the mix. That name is so bad it could actually be a title.

Did you all catch the pic on the google images link of the burned fingers?? Yikes! I morbidly clicked through... be careful with them! http://archive.reefcentral.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-1210401.html

Sure have. Have seen some pretty nasty burns up peoples arms as well from the full grown specimens. These little nems wont be getting a petting any time soon.

fission is only with some nems, my aiptasia won't ever do fission unless you practically rip them in half lol, they always prefer pedal laceration. Maybe yours is a fission species, hopefully he breeds for you.

I can see it now, anemoneraptor, a innocent experiment on transgenic aiptasia for a solution to coral bleaching, somehow they become amphibious and go to invade all costal cities leaving pedal piece monsters behind, then well we need more thought to make a good ending.
